Elon Musk Unleashes DOGE on AmeriCorps Challenge

AmeriCorps has become the newest target of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency , facing potential cuts of $400 million in grants.

According to The Washington Post DOGE has initiated a nationwide service program involving thousands of volunteers throughout America to cut almost 41% of its projected 2025 funding. This affects over 32,000 AmeriCorps members and senior volunteers along with 1,031 partner organizations.

These cuts are part of a sequence of DOGE-like assaults on AmeriCorps. Last week Most of the approximately 650 full-time federal employees working for the organization were immediately put on paid administrative leave and prohibited from accessing agency systems. Additionally, many members of AmeriCorps' National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), young individuals engaged in 10-month assignments focused on disaster response, housing assistance, and educational initiatives, were suddenly dismissed. Only about 15% of AmeriCorps personnel continue to be actively employed.

The disassembly has faced intense criticism. Louisiana’s Republican Senator Bill Cassidy turned to Twitter to protest against the reductions, asserting that he endorses "enhancing efficiency and eradicating wastage" yet contends that the service has delivered "critical assistance" within his state.

California Governor Gavin Newsom In reaction to last week's announcement that the state plans to file a lawsuit aimed at halting the shutdown, he called it a betrayal of America’s civil rights heritage. "We've transitioned from the era of the New Deal, the New Frontier, and the Great Society to one where our federal administration essentially flips off those who volunteer to serve their fellow citizens," Newsom stated.

The specific legal basis for the lawsuit has not been disclosed to the public; however, the situation is becoming increasingly tense as various nonprofit groups, disaster management agencies, and veteran support organizations prepare themselves for potential consequences.

Founded under President Bill Clinton In 1993, AmeriCorps carries forward the legacy of Lyndon B. Johnson’s antipoverty VISTA initiative and has long maintained a presence as a fixture supported by both political parties.

This organization sends volunteers to reconstruct areas affected by natural calamities, mentor underprivileged youth, and assist elderly individuals. In return for their work, these helpers get a small stipend for daily expenses, fundamental perks, and an educational grant valued at approximately $7,300 upon completion of 1,700 hours of community service. The entity functions with a financial plan of about $1 billion annually.

Currently, comprehensive networks for disaster response, housing assistance, and community education initiatives are at risk of disintegration.

"A significant number of nonprofit groups and governmental bodies will require assistance," remarked Jade Marshalek, who was a recent alumnus of the NCCC program. told the Associated Press And nobody will be left to do it.

The Daily Beast has contacted both The White House and AmeriCorps for their input.
