Lenana School: Fees, KCSE Results & Contact Info

The Lenana School (previously known as Duke of York School) is a leading public boys' high school situated in Nairobi County.

This school is one of Kenya’s national institutions and falls under the category of the 18 elite Cluster Three (III) secondary schools.

The roots of Lenana School trace back to 1949 when it was established by colonial governor Philip Euen Mitchell. Originally, it was called the Duke of York School, named after a Royal Navy ship from the British era during World War II associated with the King George V class of battleships.

Governor Mitchell took personal charge of acquiring 250 acres of land at the outskirts of Ngong Forest in Karen, addressing the requests from settlers who desired additional secondary educational facilities for their offspring in Kenya.

He was committed to providing the apex of educational opportunities for kids across Europe.

The school's architecture was intricate, complete with a nine-hole golf course, a rifle range, horse stables, a cricket ground and pavilion, two soccer fields, two field hockey areas, three rugby grounds, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, two tennis courts, and a state-of-the-art squash court.

Lenana School history

The establishment was ultimately finished in 1949, coinciding with the release of the Beecher Report on African education. This report suggested various measures including the idea that advanced education was not needed for Africans and advocated for maintaining racial segregation within educational institutions.

Moreover, the initial group of students stayed temporarily at what used to be the British colonial governor’s residence — currently known as State House Nairobi — until the construction of the school was finished. The inaugural headmaster was R. H. James.

Following Kenya’s independence in 1963, a small number of Asian and African students began attending the school.

In 1969, the school’s name was changed to Lenana, after the famous Maasai Paramount Chief Laibon Lenana.

That same year, James Kamunge became the first African principal, initially heading an all-white teaching staff.

The bell from HMS Duke of York is installed inside a bell shelter located in front of the school parade ground, situated between the chapel and the main hall.

A portrait of Chief Lenana, crafted by student artist Sam Madoka, is displayed beside the stairs that go up to the second floor of the administrative building.

Lenana School boasts a distinguished alumni list, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki , Water Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, and the late former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati.

The current student body at the school comprises more than 1,200 students and is under the leadership of Principal William Kemei.

School Fees

The authorities had earlier released guidelines specifying the highest allowable annual school fees for parents.

In 2020, under newly implemented regulations from the Ministry of Education, Kenya categorized its 103 national schools into four groups.

Lenana School falls under Cluster III, indicating that the regulated yearly tuition limit for pupils is roughly Ksh75,798.

Nevertheless, the actual costs might differ somewhat between schools because various educational institutions can impose extra fees for items like uniforms, motivational initiatives, or non-academic activities.
