The Return of the BMW Championship at Caves Valley

After three years away, the BMW Championship has made a triumphant return to Caves Valley. This year’s event, which marks the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, brought with it a mix of challenges and excitement, from weather delays to unexpected player performances. Here’s what made Thursday’s opening round stand out.

A Renovated Course Presents New Challenges

Caves Valley has undergone significant renovations since the 2021 BMW Championship, making the course more difficult than ever before. Several holes have been reconfigured, including two par-5s that were converted into par-4s. As a result, over-par scores became more common during Thursday’s play.

In 2021, three players — Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Sam Burns — opened the tournament with 64s, and 15 players finished the first round at 5-under par or better. Players needed to shoot 27-under par through four rounds to qualify for a playoff. No one finished over par that week.

This year, however, the course proved to be a tougher test. Akshay Bhatia shot a 5-over 75, his worst round in relation to par since the U.S. Open. Xander Schauffele recorded a 74, his worst opening round since the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Defending champion Patrick Cantlay struggled with a 2-over par round, a far cry from his 6-under performance in 2021.

The course length has also increased to 7,600 yards, and the greens now feature more slope, adding to the challenge. “They’re tricky,” McIlroy said after an even-par 70. “There’s a lot of slope to them. They’re quite fast, and when it’s like that, matching line and speed is pretty tricky.”

Thursday’s rain temporarily softened the greens, making putts easier for players who finished later in the day. McIlroy predicted that this would lead to more birdies, and indeed, Robert MacIntyre took advantage of the softer conditions to take the solo lead with an 8-under par score.

Denny McCarthy Makes a Strong Start

Maryland native Denny McCarthy entered the week ranked 38th in the FedEx Cup standings, needing to finish in the top 30 to reach the Tour Championship for the first time in his career. He started with an even-par 70, showing promise but still needing improvement in the coming days.

McCarthy relied on his putting to maintain his position, and he managed the heat effectively by staying hydrated, changing clothes, and rotating gloves to keep his grip dry. “It’s really hot. It’s really gross out,” he said. “Just got to maintain my energy levels, hydration, be eating on the course.”

Scottie Scheffler Navigates the Course and Lanternflies

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler had a solid start, shooting a 4-under 66. His round included birdies on three of his first four holes and three of his last four, though he struggled in the middle with two bogeys and eight pars. Despite the ups and downs, Scheffler remains a strong contender.

One of the biggest distractions for Scheffler was the presence of spotted lanternflies, invasive pests that have become prevalent in Maryland. During a media session, he was briefly interrupted when a lanternfly landed on his leg. After being informed of the situation, he stomped on it with a wry smile.

Scheffler also encountered another lanternfly on the driving range, but he remained focused on his game, seemingly unfazed by the insects.

Player Misidentification and Unique Moments

The Baltimore crowd showed its passion, but not without some confusion. Harry Hall, wearing a flat cap similar to Bryson DeChambeau’s, sparked a few mistaken identities. Hall, however, made the most of the moment, shooting a 2-under 68 to put himself in contention.

J.T. Poston Plays Solo

With Sepp Straka withdrawing from the tournament, J.T. Poston found himself playing alone each day. He teed off first on Thursday and completed his round in just 3.5 hours, finishing with a 2-over 72. Though he is currently outside the projected top 30, he will look to improve in the following days.
