The Limits of Human Understanding

The undeniable reality that lingers in the mind, like a sharp piece of glass embedded in the soft tissue of the brain, is that humans cannot find God through their own efforts. This may seem shocking, but it should not be. Humans, like all created beings, have inherent limitations. The wise individual recognizes these boundaries but also seeks ways to transcend them.

Unlike angels, humans were not given the ability to fly. However, through ingenuity and resourcefulness, they developed airplanes, allowing them to soar through the skies. Similarly, early humans were bound to the Earth, with only visual contact with the stars. Today, we have landed on the moon and may one day colonize it.

Humans also lack the regenerative abilities of creatures like the octopus. If a limb is lost, it is gone forever—unless modern medicine intervenes. Transplant surgery now allows people to replace lost body parts, expanding the limits of what was once thought impossible.

Advancements in science, technology, and knowledge have transformed the human experience, enabling us to go beyond our natural constraints. Whether good or bad, desirable or not, humanity’s reach often exceeds its grasp. We believe we have no limits, yet there remains one fundamental truth: by our own efforts, we cannot find God.

Throughout history, every culture has searched for God, yet no one has ever succeeded in discovering Him through their own initiative. What people have found instead are images or representations of what they imagine God to be. This is the essence of religious superstition and ignorance, the result of philosophical and intellectual exploration without divine guidance.

This misunderstanding often fuels atheism, as individuals reject the idea of God based on the belief that such a being is unknowable or nonexistent. People around the world will go to extreme lengths to protect their perceived understanding of God. For example, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced execution for refusing to worship false gods.

Even ancient civilizations like the Greeks, known for their philosophical advancements, believed in a pantheon of gods. The Romans followed suit, adopting and renaming many Greek deities. Yet, none of these cultures discovered the true God.

God has never been accessible through human effort alone. Sincere foolishness does not open the door to His presence. This is a gap that man cannot bridge on his own. When Job faced suffering, his friend Zophar asked, “Canst thou by searching find out God?” (Job 11:7). The answer is clear: No, you cannot.

God has never allowed anyone to find Him through their own initiative, because that would imply surrendering something that belongs exclusively to Him. The only way a person can truly encounter God is if He chooses to reveal Himself.

Adam did not seek God; it was God who revealed Himself to Adam after creation. Similarly, Abraham did not find God; it was God who sought him out and established a covenant. In every instance of spiritual awakening, it has been God who took the first step.

The Bible affirms this truth: “And no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.” (Luke 10:22)

Despite humanity's flaws, God has shown immense grace and mercy. He could have let the world perish, but instead, He worked tirelessly to bring salvation to those who would believe. Jesus lamented over Jerusalem, saying, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” (Matthew 23:37)

Even when we turn away from God, He continues to offer us the chance to return. Salvation is not reserved for a select few. God extends His love and mercy to all, sending the Holy Spirit to urge acceptance of Jesus Christ. As the Bible says, “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him.” (John 6:44)

When someone decides to change their life and commit to Jesus, the Bible encourages them to seek the Lord while He may be found. It promises, “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.” (Isaiah 55:6) And it reassures, “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.” (Proverbs 8:17)
