Maury Commodores: A Legacy of Excellence

Maury High School’s football program has become a powerhouse in the Eastern District, consistently making its mark in Class 5 state championship games. Over the past six seasons, the Commodores have reached the state finals five times, securing three titles. Last season, they made history by becoming only the third team in the Eastern District to win back-to-back state championships, a feat not seen in nearly 80 years. This accomplishment places them alongside legendary teams like Wilson (1926-27) and Granby (1945-46).

Despite losing key players from last year’s undefeated squad, including quarterback Au’Tori Newkirk, who signed with North Carolina, coach Dyrri McCain remains optimistic about the future. “One of the most fun things about being here, and at this level, is it’s a new team and a new group,” he said. “There are pieces that are gone. But instead of dwelling on that, the challenge is getting the next group ready. We’re ready.”

Over eight seasons, McCain has led the Commodores to five state final appearances, three undefeated state championship teams (2019, 2023, 2024), and seven consecutive region titles. The team will be led by several returning players, including LB/TE Isaiah Simmons, WR/DB Jahvon Wiggins, and QB Domo Everette, who will step into a leadership role after learning under Newkirk.

Granby Comets: Rising from the Past

Under the guidance of coach Kendal Jefferson, the Granby Comets have made a dramatic turnaround. Before his arrival, the team had struggled, posting a 3-29 record over four seasons and missing the playoffs since 2017. However, Jefferson has brought stability and success, leading the Comets to the playoffs in each of his two seasons. This year, they aim to take it a step further and win their first playoff game.

The team features strong senior leaders such as Javea Trotter and Chaz Morris, along with sophomore Chance Fleetwood, who brings size and strength to the line of scrimmage. Senior quarterback Jimier Chinn is expected to lead the offense, while sophomore RB Gerald Blackmon continues a family football legacy. Freshman Semaj Lyons is also a player to watch.

Lake Taylor Titans: Rebuilding Tradition

After a disappointing 3-7 season, the Lake Taylor Titans are looking to reclaim their place as a top program. Coach Hank Sawyer, in his 26th season, emphasized the importance of hard work in the weight room and on the field. Senior captain Magerald Clark is a versatile player, contributing as a wide receiver, running back, and defensive back. Keon Johnson, another senior, earned all-region honors for his rushing performance. Quarterback Kevin Adams, who threw for 1,737 yards and 12 touchdowns, will need to lead the offense this season.

Norcom Greyhounds: A Program on the Rise

The Norcom Greyhounds, under coach Anthony Hawkins, are determined to elevate their program. With a mix of experienced players and young talent, the team aims to become one of the top programs in Hampton Roads. Key players include WR Marquell Johnson and QB Emory Hurt, while the offensive line features Tyre Tabron, Tre Styles, and King Green. The secondary is young but athletic, with standout players like Di’Andre Atkins and Jahrel Sims.

Churchland Truckers: Seeking Deeper Playoffs

Coach Dontrell Leonard has led the Churchland Truckers to the playoffs in each of his seven seasons. This year, he aims to take them deeper into the postseason. Quarterback Logan Wynne has several talented receivers, including Dareon Ripley and Elijah Salmon. RB Keith Williams and OL Anthony Whitelaw are also key contributors.

Norview Pilots: A New Era

With Karlynn Ferebee taking over as head coach, the Norview Pilots are entering a new chapter. Ferebee, who previously served as an assistant, is excited about the team’s potential. The Pilots have 18 seniors ready to turn the program around, with TE/DE Haiden Louther and versatile athlete Zavian Bynum leading the way.

Booker T. Washington Bookers: A Fresh Start

Mason Williams is working to rebuild the Booker T. Washington Bookers after a difficult first season. The team is playing on a new artificial-turf field, and Williams believes the program can return to its former glory. Players like QB/DB Kelvin Battle and WR/DB Petey Richardson will be crucial this season.

Manor Mustangs: A Foundation for the Future

Detric Avents takes over a struggling Manor Mustangs program, which has not had a winning season since 2004. Despite a 16-game losing streak, Avents is focused on building a foundation of discipline and effort. Senior RB/S Nahmere Peace and junior RB/DE Delvontae Crosby are among the players to watch, along with the Benton brothers, Tyrell and Ny’DaVeon. Avents believes the team will surprise many this season.
