AI Drug Breakthrough Faces Delays Unrelated to Technology Limits

The Struggles of AI in Drug Development
The field of artificial intelligence (AI) in drug development has grown into a $18 billion industry, but it is now facing significant challenges. While companies have made strides in using AI to speed up the process of developing drugs and vaccines, they are encountering difficulties that are not necessarily tied to the technology itself. Instead, these challenges stem from broader macroeconomic and regulatory issues.
Over the past few years, more than 200 biotechnology companies have attracted over $18 billion in investment, with 75 drugs or vaccines entering clinical trials. However, investor confidence is waning, and venture capital funding is becoming harder to secure. In 2021, the peak of investment saw over 40 deals worth about $1.8 billion. This year, the number of deals has dropped significantly, with less than 20 deals totaling around half of the previous year's amount.
Several companies have struggled to maintain their momentum. For instance, Recursion, a biotech company, decided to shelve three of its prospective drugs as part of a cost-cutting measure following a merger with Exscientia. None of Recursion’s AI-developed compounds have yet reached the market as approved drugs. Similarly, BenevolentAI delisted from the Euronext Amsterdam stock exchange and merged with Osaka Holdings after a major restructuring.
These setbacks highlight the challenges faced by the industry. Despite the promise of AI to revolutionize drug development, the reality is that the path to success is long and fraught with obstacles. According to Scott Schoenhaus, managing director and equity research analyst for KeyBanc Capital Markets Inc., the issue is not with the technology itself but rather with external factors such as economic conditions and regulatory environments.
Macro and Political Factors Impacting Funding
The biotech market is heavily influenced by interest rates. Lower interest rates typically lead to increased funding for biotech companies, but as rates have remained high, funding has dwindled. This trend has been exacerbated by other factors, including Big Pharma companies cutting back on research and development due to slowing demand. Additionally, uncertainty surrounding potential tariffs on pharmaceuticals has added to the challenges.
The pandemic played a role in accelerating partnerships between AI-driven startups and major pharmaceutical companies. For example, AbCellera and Eli Lilly received emergency FDA approval for an antibody used in early COVID vaccines. However, since then, the industry has faced new hurdles, including ongoing regulatory uncertainties and shifting market dynamics.
Limitations of AI in Drug Development
Despite the advancements, there are still limitations to what AI can achieve in drug development. The process of bringing a drug to market is complex and time-consuming, often taking over a decade. Even with AI, companies are only able to address one small part of this bottleneck, such as identifying drug-like molecules more efficiently.
David Siderovski, chair of the Department of Pharmacology & Neuroscience at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, explains that the entire process involves multiple stages that must be navigated before a drug can be approved. “That one early bottleneck of auditioning compounds is not the be-all and end-all of satisfying shareholders,” he said.
Smaller companies are also choosing to build their own pipelines rather than rely on partnerships with Big Pharma. This approach allows them to demonstrate the effectiveness of their AI platforms independently, even if it means forgoing some of the resources available through larger companies.
The Road Ahead
Looking ahead, the next 12 months will be critical for AI drug development startups. The results from clinical trials and data from ongoing studies will determine the future success of these companies. While there have been mixed results so far, the industry remains focused on refining its use of AI to better understand the complexities of human biology.
As the sector continues to evolve, it is clear that the path to success will require not just technological innovation, but also strategic planning, regulatory clarity, and sustained investment. The challenges are significant, but the potential rewards remain substantial for those who can navigate the complexities of this rapidly changing landscape.
