Andra Day: From San Diego to Global Stardom
Andra Day, the San Diego-raised singer and actress, has made a name for herself in the entertainment industry with her powerful performances and emotional depth. Known for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lee Daniels’ film The United States vs. Billie Holiday, she earned both a Grammy Award and a Golden Globe in 2021. Her upcoming performance at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park on Friday, September 19, alongside Jon Batiste, is a highly anticipated event.
Day’s journey to stardom began in San Diego, where she attended the San Diego School of Creative & Performing Arts. She even delivered the San Diego Union-Tribune as part of a part-time job during her late teens. These early experiences shaped her artistic identity and helped her develop a deep connection to the city.
A Unique Perspective on Humor and Acting
When asked if she was known for being funny, Day found the question amusing. “Wait! You asked AI if I was funny?” she said, laughing. “No, but yeah.” While she admitted that her work focuses more on emotional depth and powerful vocal delivery, she emphasized that humor can still play a role in her performances. In her upcoming comedy film Is This Thing On?, she plays a character named Christine, who is witty and grounded. “She will always say what everyone is thinking, but that no one wants to say,” Day explained.
This ability to blend humor with sincerity is evident in her acting and music. Whether she's performing on stage or sharing her thoughts in interviews, Day remains authentic and engaging.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing New Opportunities
Despite her success, Day has faced challenges along the way. The release of two major films in 2024 forced her to cancel a scheduled performance at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. “There was so much going on, and I was trying to do a tour in the midst of doing promo appearances for two different movies and filming a third,” she recalled. “I was like: ‘Guys, this is impossible.’”
Now, she’s back on tour with Jon Batiste, a collaboration that has brought new energy and creativity into her work. Batiste, a five-time Grammy winner, recently released his album Big Money, which features Day on the song “Lean On My Love.” Their musical rapport has been a highlight of the tour, with each performance bringing something new and exciting.
Reflecting on Her Journey
Looking back on her career, Day expressed gratitude for the opportunities she’s had. “Super close!” she said when asked how close her current reality is to her childhood dreams. “I feel it’s a blessing to be able to do what it is I’ve always been passionate about.”
One of her most impactful songs, “Rise Up,” was written during a difficult time in her life. “I was tired and stressed out,” she admitted. “I was probably aiming for going to grab something to eat afterwards.” However, the song took on a life of its own, becoming an anthem of self-empowerment that resonates globally.
The Power of Truth in Music
When asked about the inspiration behind great love songs, Day shared her thoughts. “I think there is some truth to that,” she said. “But the necessary requirement is truth—being as truthful, authentic and candid as you can be.” She believes that heartbreak and other life experiences can help shape meaningful music, but it’s the honesty in the songwriting that truly makes a difference.
Her 2024 album Cassandra (cherith) reflects this philosophy. It explores themes of faith, vulnerability, heartbreak, hope, resiliency, and self-acceptance. “That was the journey,” she said. “That’s why I named it Cassandra—because there are many facets to the album.”
Looking Ahead
As she prepares for her performance at The Rady Shell, Day is excited about what the future holds. She mentioned her upcoming projects, including a dance-happy house music record and a collaboration with jazz bassist Christian McBride. “I’m definitely excited,” she said. “It’s a great way to dip my foot back into the world of touring.”
With her unique voice and compelling storytelling, Andra Day continues to captivate audiences around the world. Her journey from San Diego to global stardom is a testament to her talent, resilience, and dedication to her craft.
