CORTIS, BigHit's First Rookie Group in 6 Years, Shine at Debut Party

CORTIS Makes a Bold Debut with "COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES"
CORTIS, the latest group from BigHit Music, has made a strong impression as the label's first new act in six years. Fans have been eagerly anticipating their arrival, especially given the legacy of previous groups like BTS and TOMORROW X TOGETHER. From their debut track "GO!" to the energetic "What You Want," the group has shown a unique blend of free-spirited energy and visually striking performances. Before even officially debuting, they stood out by participating in overseas songwriting camps, which is not typical for rookie groups.
On September 8, CORTIS released their first album, COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES, during a special event that marked their first stand-alone concert. The venue, which holds nearly 8,000 seats, was symbolic, as it was where BTS once performed over a decade ago. Every seat was filled, and fans from 190 countries watched live via Weverse, HYBE Labels’ YouTube channel, and TikTok. The event was designed to introduce the album through the members' own words, showcase new performances, and create lasting memories with fans.
The concert began with the lights dimming and the first heavy beats dropping, building anticipation for CORTIS' arrival. Instead of appearing from the main stage, the group emerged from the ground-floor entrance, catching the audience off guard. They performed "FaSHioN" for the first time, a track choreographed by the members themselves. This performance contrasted with earlier songs like "GO!" and "What You Want," showcasing a different side of the group. After the performance, the members shared behind-the-scenes stories about their debut album and music videos.
"We wanted to keep things casual with you, so we decided to go without an MC," explained leader Martin, showing his confidence and poise. During what they called "album brag time," the members described their project as "complicated yet simple, just like our inner selves," "an honest album," and "all about freshness."
The stage then transformed into "the hideout," a set resembling the members' studio space. Here, they shared memories attached to five emojis drawn on Post-its, recalling their early days before debut. Inspired by "FaSHioN," the group launched a fan event to find the "Best CORTIS Look-Alike." Members roamed the venue, interacting with fans and creating an electric atmosphere.
Later, after a costume change, CORTIS returned to the stage with an expanded version of their treadmill performance of "What You Want." Previously performed with 11 treadmills, this time the number increased to 31. Despite the challenge, the group executed flawless choreography and led the crowd into synchronized cheers.
The mood shifted again with live performances of "JoyRide" and "Lullaby." These tracks showcased a more emotional and restrained side of the group. "JoyRide" evoked the feeling of a carefree drive through Malibu, while "Lullaby," highlighted by Martin’s favorite lyric, "Why turn on the A/C when it's already cold?" captured the pressures of adolescence. The music video for "Lullaby" premiered during the event, followed by a passionate encore of "FaSHioN."
As the concert neared its end, emotions ran high. James, the eldest member, shed tears while expressing gratitude, reflecting on his long trainee period. Sunghyun was also visibly moved, while Martin addressed the crowd with conviction: "Thank you sincerely for filling this space today. It's going to be a long journey, but we hope you'll stay with us." The group delivered a special handheld mic version of "What You Want" before surprising everyone with an unscripted double encore of "FaSHioN."
The release party wasn't just a debut showcase—it was a declaration of intent from a self-proclaimed "young creator crew." CORTIS aimed to carve their own path rather than follow conventional standards. Their debut album, COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES, sold 247,295 copies on its first day, making it the highest debut-day sales among rookie groups this year. Within three days, cumulative sales surpassed 310,000.
Globally, the album made waves, entering the U.S. Apple Music Top Albums chart at No. 65, the U.S. iTunes Top Albums chart at No. 88, and reaching No. 32. In Japan, it landed at No. 2 on the Oricon Daily Album Ranking. In China, every track from the album entered QQ Music's Rising, Popularity, and New Song charts. With such overwhelming attention and the sincerity displayed at their release party, anticipation is high for how CORTIS will continue to shape their unique sound.
