Major Traffic and Rail Disruptions Across the UK

A series of traffic and rail disruptions have caused significant travel challenges for commuters across the UK. These incidents, ranging from road accidents to signaling failures and train delays, have impacted multiple transport networks, leading to widespread inconvenience.

M25 Traffic Chaos Following a Multi-Car Crash

On Wednesday morning, a multi-car crash on the M25 anti-clockwise between junctions 17 and 18 led to severe traffic congestion and an injured woman being taken to Watford General Hospital. A section of the M25 between junctions 16 and 17 was temporarily closed, causing major delays. However, the road has since reopened, and the incident has been cleared.

Further complications arose on the M25 clockwise between junctions 5 and 6 due to another collision. Two out of four lanes were closed, resulting in delays of up to one and a half hours until around 10:15 am. Additionally, traffic queues built up for 13 miles due to a fallen tree and an earlier crash on the M25 clockwise in Sevenoaks. One lane was closed, and traffic is expected to return to normal by 11:45 am.

The M4 spur leading to Heathrow Airport also experienced minor delays of up to 10 minutes between junctions 4 and 4A, with normal conditions expected by 11:00 am.

Rail Network Disruptions

Rail services across the country faced numerous issues, including signal failures, track faults, and points failures. The Piccadilly line is partially suspended between Acton Town and Uxbridge due to a signal failure, while the Central line experiences minor delays from train cancellations.

The Windrush line, which had been suspended due to a signaling failure, has now reopened. Similarly, the District and Elizabeth lines have seen their earlier delays resolved, with good service reported on both lines.

Gatwick Airport experienced rail disruption due to a points failure, affecting trains running through the station. Delays of up to 20 minutes are expected until around 11:00 am. Affected operators include the Gatwick Express, Great Western Railway, Southern, and Thameslink.

The Northern line is partially suspended between Edgware and Burnt Oak, with additional delays between Burnt Oak and Camden Town. Meanwhile, the Elizabeth line faces delays between Whitechapel and Shenfield due to a track fault at Harold Wood.

Other affected lines include the Thameslink, which is experiencing disruptions due to a points failure at Gatwick, and the South Western Railway, which faced temporary blockages after a passenger became ill at Wimbledon. Trains may be delayed or cancelled for up to 20 minutes until 11:00 am.

Additional Disruptions and Alternative Travel Advice

The District line is experiencing delays on westbound services from Upminster to Tower Hill due to a faulty train at Dagenham East. The Northern line has also faced part suspension due to an earlier customer incident.

In Epsom, a tree blocking the railway line at Epsom Downs has resulted in no trains running between Victoria and Epsom. Disruption is expected until 10:00 am, with alternative routes provided for affected passengers.

Network Rail is working to resolve these issues, and passengers are advised to check for updates before traveling. In some cases, tickets can be used on alternative services at no extra cost, including buses and other train routes.

Ongoing Issues and Expected Resolutions

Several lines are still experiencing disruptions, with some expected to clear by mid-morning. For example, the Elizabeth line and Greater Anglia trains between Romford and Shenfield face delays due to a defective track. A speed restriction is in place, and services may be delayed by up to 20 minutes until around 9:30 am.

Lines between St Pancras and Luton remain disrupted due to an electricity supply failure, with disruption expected until 9:15 am. Additionally, engineering works between Dalston Junction and Norwood Junction have caused major disruption until 11:00 am, with suspended services and alternative travel options available.
