Electric Vehicles Outperform Gas-Powered Cars in Greenhouse Gas Reduction
A recent study conducted by the University of Michigan has revealed that electric vehicles (EVs) produce significantly fewer greenhouse gases than traditional gas-powered cars, even when considering factors such as battery production, limited range during extreme weather, and reliance on coal-fired power grids. The findings, published in a journal of the American Chemical Society, highlight the environmental advantages of EVs across various regions in the United States.
The research compared the projected lifetime emissions of battery-electric, hybrid, and gas-powered vehicles from the 2025 model year. On average, gas-powered vehicles generate about 70% more greenhouse gases than EVs with a 300-mile (482-km) range. This conclusion takes into account emissions from battery and vehicle production, a typical lifespan of around 200,000 miles, and the recycling or disposal of the vehicle at the end of its life.
According to the data, EVs are less polluting than plug-in hybrids, which in turn are cleaner than traditional hybrids. Hybrids, in turn, emit less than gas-powered vehicles. Additionally, smaller vehicles of any type are less emission-intensive than larger models like SUVs and pickup trucks. These findings underscore the importance of individual choices in reducing overall pollution levels.
Vehicle Choices Impact National Emissions
Pickups, SUVs, sedans, and other personal transportation vehicles contribute roughly 16% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. The study emphasizes that consumer decisions play a critical role in mitigating these emissions. Greg Keoleian, a co-director of the University of Michigan’s Center for Sustainable Systems and one of the study authors, stated that while there may be variations in the extent of benefits, the study clearly shows that EVs offer advantages across the country.
Challenges to Widespread Adoption
Despite these benefits, the adoption of EVs in the U.S. remains relatively low. Battery-powered models currently make up only about 8% of the market share and account for at most 5% of vehicles in use. Analysts predict a surge in sales before the end of September, when a tax credit of $7,500 for buyers and lessees will expire. After this date, automakers anticipate a temporary decline in sales.
Several factors contribute to the slow growth of EV sales. High sticker prices, limited access to fast charging stations, and concerns about driving range have all hindered consumer interest. Additionally, policies under the previous administration, including plans to eliminate federal tailpipe emissions regulations, have created uncertainty in the industry.
Industry Outlook and Consumer Demand
Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of market research at auto communications firm Telemetry, noted that while some analysts believe EVs will eventually dominate the market, short-term challenges have been exacerbated by policy shifts. He emphasized that despite these hurdles, the industry is still moving toward electrification.
"Manufacturers, despite slowing some product rollouts, are still producing EVs and will continue doing so," he said. Recent developments, however, show a slow and uneven transition. For example, Ford Motor Co. recently announced a $2 billion investment to build an electric midsize pickup but delayed the start of production at a Tennessee battery plant until 2027. Similarly, General Motors Co. is temporarily reducing EV production at plants in Kansas and Tennessee due to weak demand.
Environmental Benefits Across Regions
Even in areas with coal-heavy power grids, EVs remain a greener option. A calculator developed by the University of Michigan allows users to compare emissions between different vehicles based on their location. In regions powered by wind, hydroelectric, solar, or nuclear energy, the benefits are even more pronounced. For instance, driving an EV sedan in Oregon, where hydroelectric power is prevalent, could reduce emissions by up to 90% compared to a gas-powered SUV.
Kathy Harris, director for clean vehicles at the Natural Resources Defense Council, highlighted that EVs become cleaner over time as the power grid transitions to renewable sources. "A cleaner grid means a cleaner EV," she said.
Long-Term Advantages of EVs
While battery production is emissions-intensive, the overall lifecycle of an EV—including manufacturing, operation, and end-of-life recycling—still results in lower greenhouse gas emissions than gas-powered vehicles. Keoleian acknowledged the tradeoffs involved but emphasized that the benefits are "overwhelming."
Previous studies based on 2020 model-year vehicles found that gas-powered cars were slightly better for the environment in about 1-2% of U.S. counties. However, the current study assumes that the U.S. power grid will increasingly rely on renewable energy sources. Utilities are already planning for increased demand from EV charging and adjusting accordingly.
"Every single time, when you look at total life cycle emissions, EVs come out ahead," Abuelsamid said. This comprehensive analysis reinforces the growing consensus that electric vehicles are a key component of a sustainable transportation future.
