Trump's Controversial BLS Nominee Set for Senate Hearing

Senate Committee to Hold Hearing on E.J. Antoni’s Nomination as BLS Commissioner
E.J. Antoni, President Donald Trump’s controversial choice to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), is set to face scrutiny from the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP Committee). Two sources familiar with the process confirmed that the hearing is expected to take place in September, provided Antoni submits his paperwork on time. The hearing will also include four other nominees: Scott Mayer and James Murphy for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Rosario Palmieri for assistant secretary of labor for policy, and Surgeon General nominee Casey Means.
The HELP Committee typically does not hold confirmation hearings for BLS commissioners, but pressure from Democrats and BLS advocates has increased calls for a thorough examination of Antoni’s qualifications. Concerns have been raised about his lack of experience and his alignment with Trump’s policies.
Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) criticized Antoni as an “unqualified right-wing extremist” who might manipulate BLS data to favor the former president. Similarly, Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) described Antoni as a “devout Trump loyalist” and urged him to appear before the committee. She warned that his appointment could damage the credibility of the agency and have significant economic consequences.
The Friends of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an advocacy group with several former BLS commissioners, has called for a detailed evaluation of Antoni using specific criteria such as management experience and understanding of BLS operations. Erica Groshen, co-chair of the group and a former BLS commissioner under President Obama, emphasized the need for the Senate to assess the qualities required for the role.
Groshen noted that she had no formal hearing when she was nominated in 2012, but she did engage with committee staff and watched her confirmation vote on CSPAN. She highlighted that only one previous BLS commissioner, William Beach, had faced a HELP Committee hearing. Beach, a conservative economist with ties to the Heritage Foundation, had previously compared himself to Antoni.
Recent reports revealed that Antoni attended the January 6 rally, though he did not enter the Capitol building. Despite this, HELP Committee Chair Senator Bill Cassidy has condemned the attack and expressed concerns about the reliability of BLS data. He stated that the Senate needs a commissioner committed to producing accurate, unbiased economic information.
Cassidy, who faces a potential GOP primary challenge in 2026, has aligned closely with Trump’s agenda. His decision to vote to convict Trump for his role in the January 6 insurrection made him a target of MAGA supporters. However, he has maintained that the Constitution and country come before any individual.
Cassidy also played a key role in the confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as health secretary, questioning his anti-vaccine stance and securing a promise that the CDC’s advisory panel would remain unchanged. However, Kennedy later removed the panel members.
Economists across the political spectrum have raised concerns about Antoni’s nomination, fearing it could politicize the BLS. Trump’s Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnik, recently questioned the independence of federal statistical agencies.
Despite these concerns, Groshen believes the BLS’s established processes would make it difficult for a new commissioner to alter data significantly. She suggested that resistance from current employees could create internal turmoil if changes were attempted.
Among the other nominees, Mayer and Murphy bring strong management-side credentials to the NLRB, while Palmieri has opposed federal regulations. Surgeon General nominee Means has made controversial statements on social media, including criticism of vaccine mandates and praise for RFK Jr.
While Antoni faces the most public scrutiny, each nominee aligns with Trump’s broader agenda in their own way. The upcoming hearing will likely highlight the tensions between political loyalty and the need for impartiality in federal agencies.
