Live Updates: Tigers vs. Mariners ALDS Game 2

Game 2: Seattle Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers
In a thrilling Game 2 of the American League Division Series, the Seattle Mariners faced off against the Detroit Tigers, with Luis Castillo taking the mound for Seattle and Tarik Skubal leading the Tigers. The game was filled with dramatic moments, key plays, and crucial runs that ultimately led to a 3-2 victory for the Mariners.
9th Inning: A Clean Finish
The ninth inning proved to be the decisive moment in the game. Andrés Muñoz took the mound and delivered a clean inning, earning the save for Seattle. He struck out Zach McKinstry, got Javier Báez to pop up to second base, and ended the game with a chopper to first base by Parker Meadows. This marked the first postseason home win for the Mariners since Game 5 of the 2001 AL Division Series over the Cleveland (then) Indians.
8th Inning: A Tense Battle
The eighth inning saw Matt Brash take over from Eduard Bazardo. Brash walked Gleyber Torres, bringing the tying run to the plate with left-handers Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene due up. Brash struck out Carpenter with a great slider on the outside corner for the first out of the inning. However, a sharp grounder from Greene was booted by Josh Naylor, allowing both runners to advance.
Spencer Torkelson then sliced a double inside the first baseline, scoring both Torres and Greene. Victor Robles had to make a long run to get to the ball, but it was too late. Brash bounced back with a strikeout looking of Wenceel Pérez and a called checked swing on Dillon Dingler, getting out of the inning, but it was a whole new game again.
7th Inning: A Shift in Momentum
Kyle Finnegan took over from Tarik Skubal for Detroit, who exited after allowing two runs. Cal Raleigh laced a one-out double into the right field corner, and Julio RodrÃguez followed with a double into the left field corner, allowing Raleigh to score and restore Seattle's lead. A broken bat infield single from Polanco advanced RodrÃguez to third, and the Mariners' offense came alive with Skubal out of the game.
RodrÃguez was thrown out at home as he was running on contact on a grounder to third base from Eugenio Suárez for the second out. Tigers' manager A.J. Hinch turned to left-hander Brant Hurter to face the left-handed Josh Naylor with two outs. Naylor popped out to second base as Seattle tried to hold a one-run lead in the ninth.
6th Inning: Polanco Strikes Again
Gabe Speier remained on the mound for the sixth inning for Seattle and cut down the middle of the Detroit lineup. Speier struck out left-handed hitter Riley Greene, got Spencer Torkelson to ground out to shortstop, and pinch-hitter Wenceel Pérez popped out to second base as Seattle kept the Tigers scoreless through six.
Jorge Polanco got Tarik Skubal again in the sixth inning to extend Seattle's lead. A two-out, full-count 99.1 mph fastball left in the middle of the plate with two outs was crushed out to left field by Polanco to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead. It was a nearly identical pitch location to the 91.6 mph slider that Polanco homered on in the fourth inning.
5th Inning: Stranding Runners
Javier Báez worked a one-out walk against Luis Castillo for Detroit's first base runner since the second inning. After a fielder's choice from Parker Meadows, Castillo surrendered his first hit on a 1-2 sinker through the right side as Meadows advanced to third. Manager Dan Wilson took the ball and gave it to Gabe Speier with left-handed bats Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene due up.
Speier struck out Carpenter on four pitches to strand Meadows at third base as the Mariners held their lead. Castillo's final line: 4 ⅔ innings pitched with one hit, four walks, and three strikeouts on 85 pitches with 53 strikes.
4th Inning: Polanco’s Home Run
Jorge Polanco gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead on a solo home run into the Seattle bullpen off Tarik Skubal. A 2-0 slider from Skubal was left in the middle of the plate and Polanco turned on it for his third postseason home run of his career and his 27th home run of 2025 for the Mariners. It was also the fourth inning in Game 1 when Julio RodrÃguez gave Seattle the lead with a solo home run off Troy Melton.
3rd Inning: Castillo’s Strong Performance
A much-needed nine-pitch third inning for Luis Castillo after throwing 51 pitches in his first two innings. Castillo struck out Gleyber Torres, forced a groundout to second from Kerry Carpenter, and got Riley Greene to fly out to center field.
2nd Inning: Castillo Faces Challenges
Luis Castillo issued a lead-off walk to Colt Keith as the Tigers continued to tax his pitch count. After a quick pop-up to second base by Dillon Dingler, Castillo didn't get a call from home plate umpire Jeremie Rehak on a 2-2 fastball on the inside edge of the plate. Castillo walked Zach McKinstry on the next pitch, and both runners advanced into scoring position on a swinging bunt from Javier Báez.
Another call went against Castillo as third base umpire Alan Porter said Parker Meadows checked his swing on a 1-2 fastball that would have been strike three. It took a few more pitches, but Meadows went down swinging for the third out, leaving Keith and McKinstry stranded. However, Castillo was at 51 pitches through two.
1st Inning: Castillo’s Clean Start
A lengthy but clean first inning for Mariners starter Luis Castillo. Castillo needed 25 pitches to get out of the first as all four batters Detroit sent to the plate saw at least five pitches. A walk to Kerry Carpenter with one out was the only hiccup with a strikeout of Gleyber Torres and two fly-outs to left field by Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson.
Pregame: Excitement Builds
Before the game, Mariners Hall of Famer Jay Buhner threw out the first pitch to Dominic Canzone. Injured Mariners reliever Trent Thornton took the microphone to get the crowd going before the first pitch. The game featured a mix of strong pitching, clutch hitting, and strategic decisions that ultimately led to the Mariners' victory.
