13 Injured in Heartbreaking Lansing Street Racing Crash

LANSING, Mich. ( WLNS ) — Lansing residents from the neighborhood where a massive crash left 13 people, including a child, injured Thursday night are speaking out, calling the events ‘heartbreaking.’

Thursday night, first responders from multiple jurisdictions were called out to the scene of a five-car crash on Martin Luther King Boulevard that sent 13 people to the hospital. Two of them were ejected and were last known to be listed in critical condition.

Street racing crash injured 13 people, including child, Lansing police say

According to police, the accident occurred because two motorists were engaged in a high-speed race when they collided with a car executing a lawful turn onto Pierce Road. Following these initial collisions involving those three cars, further crashes ensued impacting an additional two vehicles. WLNS, which is affiliated with News 8 based in Lansing, interviewed local residents who stated that such incidents have transpired before in their neighborhood.

"It’s extremely distressing to observe that this serves as the route for such races, since multiple accidents have occurred right before our eyes at our church," stated Rebecca Nobles, who holds the position of business administrator at Kingdom Life Church.

Nobles’ church is located just across the street from where the crash happened.

She says the responsibility for the crash is on the drivers.

“I don’t believe that the blame is on the police department for not covering more, you know, more police in this area,” she said. “I think the blame goes back on the individuals who are choosing to do these types of acts in the middle of the day and in the evening time.”

“There will be severe repercussions,” said the mayor of Lansing regarding the street racing collision.

Nobles argues that repeated occurrences of such events damage the whole community, not only those who are immediately affected.

It’s not only about the families who have lost loved ones or been hurt; we send our thoughts to each one of them," explained Nobles. "This situation impacts us all as a community too. The city truly needs everyone to support the place they cherish, because every individual plays a role here. Whatever transpired yesterday evening has touched all of us.

By Friday, no arrests had been reported regarding this incident. According to Lansing Mayor Andy Schor, individuals involved will face consequences.

The individuals concerned have been pinpointed, and severe repercussions will follow due to the damage they inflicted," he stated. "The Lansing Police Department intends to propose every charge permissible based on the evidence to the Prosecutor in order to ensure accountability from those who were responsible.
