Angelenos vent outrage over mayor's budget, proposed staff and service cuts

Over 200 individuals attended a City Council public meeting in Van Nuys on Friday concerning Mayor Karen Bass’s suggested budget. Nearly everyone present voiced concerns, stating that her proposal to terminate more than 1,600 employees could severely impact numerous municipal services.

Confronting a budget gap nearing $1 billion, Bass has suggested cutting approximately 1,647 jobs across various divisions, representing around 5% of the municipal employees. This includes eliminating 403 non-uniform positions within the Police Department, over 260 individuals from the Transportation Department, and 130 personnel at the Bureau of Street Services, responsible for road maintenance tasks.

Issues raised by municipal employees and locals

A number of individuals present at the hearing were municipal employees concerned about potential job losses as well as reductions in services. "The proposed budget amounts to an outright devastation of our staff," stated Thea Trindle, a planner from the Planning Department. "Such severe cutbacks will have repercussions for Los Angeles residents spanning many years."

Residents also spoke out.

Maria Fernandez expressed concern that her 88-year-old mother might lose access to hot meals delivered at home, as the Department of Aging—which was slated to close under the mayor’s proposed budget—was going to be consolidated with the Community Investment for Families Department.

That program has been incredibly vital for us," Fernandez stated. "She can’t cook. She can’t go shopping.

A number of individuals who voiced their concerns on Friday were against reductions at the Department of Animal Services, where an estimated 62 positions—or 16% of its staff—may be eliminated.

“We’re already operating with minimal funding,” stated Jake Miller, who manages volunteers for the department.

What’s next?

The City Council will hold an additional public meeting regarding the budget on Monday, April 28 at 4 P.M. City Council Chambers of John Ferraro at City Hall.

Leaders from Neighborhood Councils and labor unions are set to speak before the council during that session.
