DC Parents in a Rush to Find New Schools After Hope Charter Announces Closure

Parents and staff members informed DC News Now that inadequate leadership and mismanagement are responsible for the sudden closure of the school.

Kerry Smith, who serves as the school’s board president, mentioned that the choice to close was not a simple one.

"I'm upset about this situation and now I have to figure out how to get them enrolled back in school and locate suitable schools nearby," stated Albert Jones, whose two kindergarten children attend the school—A.J. and P.J.

When questioned regarding their thoughts on the school closure, both boys expressed feeling downcast and mentioned that they find this educational environment secure.

"This school is pleasant; there haven't been any shootings here, nor has there been any violence," stated 6-year-old P.J.

"This is a nice area," stated 6-year-old A.J.

Jones mentioned that the two boys have appreciated the sports activities provided by the school. These students are part of the approximately 190 children enrolled at the school, ranging from pre-K to 8th grade levels.

On Friday, families received letters informing them of the planned closure of the school.

"It hasn’t been an easy task at all, considering the weight of the decisions facing us and their implications for students, families, and staff. We haven’t made this choice impulsively," Smith stated.

During the meeting, Smith outlined several factors leading to the closure, such as declining enrollment projections and anticipated lower test scores, which would make it difficult for the school to achieve the necessary academic standards required to remain operational.

The students interviewed by DC News Now mentioned that they enjoyed their educational journey within the confines of the school’s blue and green walls.

"I was taken aback. It's a great school where everyone advances and pursues higher education," remarked sixth-grader Deandria Greene.

The school mentioned in the letter to parents that they will be holding an enrollment fair on Tuesday, April 29 between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., aimed at assisting students in finding new schools.
