Disenchanted Disney Employee Hacked Menus, Receives 3-Year Jail Sentence and $700K Fine

An ex- Disney The world staffer who tampered with the company’s computer system to alter menu allergen alerts has been ordered to serve a three-year sentence in prison.

Michael Scheuer, aged 40 from Winter Garden, Florida, introduced alterations that could have been lethal for individuals allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, and milk; however, these modified menus did not make their way to the eateries.

Scheuer relocated the positions of wine regions on the menus to match the sites of recent mass shootings, incorporated a swastika into one menu, inserted a QR code leading to a site encouraging a boycott of Israeli businesses, and barred 14 staff members from accessing their accounts.

A judge ruled on Thursday that he will be sentenced for deliberately sending a program, code, or instruction to a secure computer system with the intent of causing harm, as well as for engaging in enhanced identity theft.

Scheuer must also surrender his computer and provide $687,776 as restitution to those harmed by his criminal activities.

The ex "menu production manager" admitted guilt on January 29.

Legal papers indicate that after Scheuer was dismissed from Disney in June due to alleged "misconduct," he carried out multiple cyber intrusions into the company's network.

As part of his duties, the man was responsible for producing menus for all of Disney's restaurants. Following an internal probe, the firm alerted authorities to him as a possible culprit.

In September, federal investigators carried out a search warrant at Scheuer’s residence and confiscated four computers. When this happened, he asserted that the firm was attempting to set him up due to how his employment had ended.

The arrest took place the next month. On the evening prior to being taken into custody, he visited his ex-coworker’s house, approached the Ring doorbell camera, and flashed a thumbs-up gesture. Later, Disney accommodated this staff member at a hotel.

According to them, the firm has stopped using the software that was hacked by the man. Orlando Sentinel .
