Two Ex-High Point Students Sue Over Matt Weiss Data Breach
HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — High Point University finds itself at the center of a federal lawsuit following a data breach involving personal information belonging to many student-athletes.
The ex-defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens and previous football coach at the University of Michigan, Matt Weiss, faced federal charges in March He faced allegations of using the confidential information about student athletes to locate "personal photographs and videos" of an intimate nature.
Weiss got dismissed from the University of Michigan in 2023.
The indictment stated, "Weiss specifically focused on female college athletes." It continued, explaining how he gathered information about them through their educational background, sports achievements, and appearance before pursuing his objective of acquiring personal images and recordings not meant for anyone outside of close relationships.
Weiss is mentioned together with Keffer Development Solutions in several lawsuits stemming from these data breaches. The lawsuit submitted yesterday in a North Carolina federal court also includes High Point University as one of the defendants.
High Point University entered into an agreement with Keffer Development Solutions, a separate entity responsible for managing "an electronic medical records and athletic training platform for students. This system held private identifiable data ('PII') along with protected health details ('PHI') belonging to both plaintiffs and class members from various regions nationwide."
From 2015 through January 2023, Defendant Weiss illegally accessed student databases and student-athlete databases at over 100 colleges and universities," the lawsuit states. "Some of these databases were managed by Defendant Keffer, who was a third-party contractor for these institutions.
One college affected was High Point University. Two ex-students, known only as Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2, were informed by the Department of Justice that their confidential information had been compromised due to Weiss’s purported activities.

The lawsuit states that these student-athletes experienced an extremely disturbing and illegal invasion of privacy due to the actions of ex-football coach Matthew Weiss from both the University of Michigan and the Baltimore Ravens. His repulsive breaches of privacy were enabled by institutional oversight. This class-action suit targets Matthew Weiss, High Point University, and Keffer Development Services, LLC, aiming to address the unjustified access and exploitation of personal data—a violation so serious that affected individuals, particularly plaintiffs Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2 along with other students and athletes at High Point University, are being officially notified by the U.S. Department of Justice about the exposure of sensitive materials like intimate images and video content.
The lawsuit accuses High Point University and KDS of failing to adequately protect the confidential personal and health-related data of over 150,000 students. The complaint states that this sensitive information belonging to [the plaintiffs] among others was compromised, accessed, and removed from the system by Matthew Weiss—a former University of Michigan and Baltimore Ravens coach who has been identified as a perpetrator of sexual abuse—over an almost ten-year period.
The lawsuit claims that High Point University "failed to take appropriate measures to stop such access even though they had responsibilities toward their students, and also did not undertake reasonable efforts to inform or address the harm caused to those victimized by Matthew Weiss’s inappropriate behavior and exploitation."
KDS’s Athletic Trainer Software, previously utilized at High Point University, "did not adopt fundamental, industry-standard measures to safeguard students'—including Jane Does 1 and 2's—personal identifying data and confidential health information."
As stated in the lawsuit, High Point University hasn't reached out to any previous students who might have been affected by Weiss’s behavior.
"The complaint alleges that this program constitutes the most extensive online invasion of student-athletes' sexuality in U.S. history," it reads.
FOX8 contacted High Point University seeking their input. We are currently awaiting their response.
