A Journey of Empowerment and Literacy

Tyrone Gethers has spent over two decades in the field of education, dedicating his life to uplifting voices that are often overlooked. His passion for reading and writing was nurtured from an early age, growing up in a home where education was highly valued. As a child, he found joy in sketching comics and crafting stories, which eventually led him to pursue a career in teaching English and language arts.

Currently, Gethers serves as a literacy coach for the Hickman Mills School District, where he supports students on their creative journeys. His work extends beyond the classroom, as he recognized the need for more representation and support for writers of color. This realization inspired him to establish Obsidian’s Pen, a grassroots organization focused on promoting literacy, mentoring emerging writers, and helping them get published.

The Founding of Obsidian's Pen

Gethers’ decision to start Obsidian’s Pen came from personal experiences and observations. He recalls meeting local poets and writers who shared similar backgrounds but faced significant challenges in getting their work recognized. These interactions highlighted the lack of opportunities for Black writers and motivated him to create a space where they could thrive.

The organization offers a range of services, including writing workshops, literary coaching, K–12 tutoring, and more. Its mission is to bridge the literacy gap and empower writers of color to tell their own stories. Over time, the organization has grown significantly, with other groups reaching out for collaboration and support.

Expanding Services and Impact

Obsidian’s Pen operates in two main areas: literacy and tutoring. On the literacy side, the organization provides editing, literary coaching, and various workshops aimed at enhancing writing skills. In the tutoring sector, they assist K–12 students and some undergraduates, covering core subjects and electives. The focus is on creating access and fostering a supportive environment for all learners.

Gethers emphasizes the importance of organizations like his in addressing the serious literacy gap in Kansas City. Many students graduate without the necessary literacy skills to succeed in college or the workforce. By offering mentorship and resources, Obsidian’s Pen aims to close this gap and provide opportunities for underrepresented voices.

Challenges and Breakthroughs

One of the main challenges for aspiring writers today includes access to resources, mentorship, and support. Gethers believes that having a network of guidance and encouragement is essential for new writers. Obsidian’s Pen has built a community of about 70 individuals who support each other through events, pop-ups, and shared resources.

Several breakthroughs have marked the organization’s journey. Opening a headquarters on the Plaza and becoming a finalist for the KC People’s Choice Awards for Best Author were significant milestones. These achievements have helped raise the profile of the organization and its mission.

Measuring Impact and Staying Motivated

Gethers measures the impact of his work by building strong relationships with the families he serves. He stays in touch with students beyond tutoring sessions, checking in on their progress and well-being. Parents often express appreciation for the genuine care and commitment shown by the team at Obsidian’s Pen.

Staying motivated comes from a small group of accountability partners and the drive to overcome challenges. Rejection and doubt fuel his determination, as he follows in the footsteps of his ancestors who never gave up. Watching his nine-year-old son grow up seeing him as a role model also keeps him inspired.

The Power of Representation

Gethers strongly believes in the importance of representation in publishing, especially for Black voices. Seeing someone who looks like you and shares your background gives your story validity. He has witnessed how introducing students to authors who reflect their experiences can shift engagement and inspire confidence.

Through his work, Gethers continues to support literacy in meaningful ways, contributing to a movement that is making a difference in the city. His vision for the future includes being integrated into schools, teaching students that literacy extends beyond the classroom and into everyday life.

Looking Ahead

Gethers aims to expand the reach of Obsidian’s Pen, ensuring that literacy becomes a constant presence in education, home, and the community. He envisions a future where students recognize the many paths that literacy can take them, from books and interviews to TV and radio. By continuing to support writers of color and fostering a sense of belonging, Gethers remains committed to his mission of empowerment and change.
