Quinta Brunson on Janine's Bold Swearing and Philly Sports Cameo in 'Abbott Elementary' Crossover

A Celebration of "Abbott Elementary" at San Diego Comic-Con
The hit ABC comedy "Abbott Elementary" has always been a proud representation of Philadelphia, showcasing the city's culture and local sports teams. From featuring Eagles players in its Season 3 premiere to including the Philadelphia Flyers' mascot Gritty in a previous storyline, the show continues to celebrate its roots.
At San Diego Comic-Con, series creator and star Quinta Brunson hinted at more surprises for fans. She mentioned that the team plans to film at a live event, though she didn't reveal specifics. Fans can expect to be delighted with what's coming next.
The show is not only popular among viewers but also receiving critical acclaim. "Abbott Elementary" was recently nominated for six Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series. The cast and crew are already working on Season 5, which is set to return in October.
During the Comic-Con panel, the cast and crew shared behind-the-scenes insights with an enthusiastic audience. One fan even dressed as Mr. D.N.A., a nod to Janine and Gregory’s couples costume from the Halloween episode.
After the panel, the cast stopped by The News Pulse Studio presented by Google TV to discuss what's ahead in Season 5. Fans are eager to know if Gregory is really driving Uber due to financial issues or if he has another plan in mind. Additionally, Brunson addressed Janine's unexpected use of the C-word during the "Always Sunny in Philadelphia" crossover episode.
"It didn't seem jarring to me because I don't cuss often. That word is wild and British, but I just said it," Brunson explained. She admitted she didn't realize how shocking it would be until it aired, leading to many disappointed messages from mothers.
While Janine doesn't have a potty mouth, her outburst was a reaction to "Always Sunny's" Dee trying to pursue Gregory. Tyler James Williams noted that Janine's possessiveness has been a fun aspect of exploring her relationship with Gregory.
"One of the most fun things for me is how she can get jealous, which we never expected to see on her," Williams said. He added that relationships offer new ways to understand characters, similar to Ava and O'Shon's dynamic.
Janelle James enjoyed portraying Ava's new side as she becomes involved with the school district's IT representative. "I feel like I'm in a rom-com, which is my favorite genre," she said. She also highlighted the importance of showing self-sabotage in adult relationships.
Lisa Ann Walter joked about her character Melissa's transformation, noting that she's becoming more open-minded. "Getting closer to some of these young people has changed her a little bit," she said. Brunson added that the cast talks about Melissa in the room, highlighting her growth.
Chris Perfetti teased that the writers are focusing more on physical comedy for his character, Jacob, who deals with anxiety. William Stanford Davis shared that Mr. Johnson, the school's janitor, continues to surprise everyone with his diverse skills.
Sheryl Lee Ralph reflected on why Barbara Howard, the long-serving teacher, keeps teaching. "They love what they do and want to keep doing it," she said. While she enjoys her work, she looks forward to a break, unlike the teachers she portrays.
Tyler James Williams emphasized the significance of why teachers choose to stay in their jobs. "Every year, they have to choose to stay here," he said. This theme resonates throughout the show, highlighting the dedication of educators.
As the cast prepares to return to set, fans can look forward to more episodes of "Abbott Elementary." The show continues to entertain and inspire, celebrating the joy and challenges of teaching.
