Tennessee Unveils Tunnel Plan to Nashville Airport via Elon Musk's Boring Company

The Boring Company Unveils the Music City Loop
Elon Musk’s The Boring Company has officially announced plans to construct a high-speed tunnel connecting Nashville International Airport (BNA) to downtown Nashville. This new project, named the Music City Loop, aims to revolutionize transportation in the city by reducing traffic congestion and offering a faster alternative for commuters.
The decision to bring this project to Nashville was based on the city's rapid growth, strong economic potential, and commitment to innovative infrastructure. Officials highlighted that the Music City Loop will remove thousands of vehicles from surface roads daily, alleviating traffic and creating job opportunities for residents.
A major announcement took place on July 28 at BNA, where top leaders from business and politics gathered to discuss this significant development. The tunnel is expected to span approximately 10 miles, linking the city center to Tennessee's largest airport once completed. Key stakeholders involved in the project include Governor Bill Lee, the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, Nashville International Airport, the Nashville Music City Center, and the Greater Nashville Hospitality Association.
Governor Lee emphasized that the project is entirely privately funded, meaning there will be no cost to Tennessee taxpayers. "They could have taken their next underground loop anywhere, but they saw something unique about Tennessee," he said.
Construction is set to begin immediately, with an anticipated completion date by fall 2026. The Boring Company recently received the TSA Gold Standard Award, the highest safety and security rating available from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy expressed confidence in the project, stating that his agency will streamline the permitting process while ensuring safety.
Innovative Approach to Urban Mobility
The Boring Company claims that the tunnel construction will not cause road closures or disruptions. According to the company, compact tunnels reduce excavation volume and cost, with minimal vibration and noise during urban tunneling. The tunnel will allow for a quick eight-to-10-minute ride between downtown Nashville and the airport using Tesla vehicles.
Steve Davis, CEO of The Boring Company, stated that construction will begin as soon as possible, aiming to complete the project within two years. The company plans to start with the downtown-to-BNA track and later expand to additional stops across Nashville.
Notably, Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell was absent from the announcement event. He expressed concerns about the potential impacts on Metro Nashville and Nashvillians, stating that the city has operational questions to address.
Public Reaction and Controversy
Public reactions to the project have been mixed. Some locals and tourists have welcomed the idea, citing convenience and reduced traffic congestion. Martin Cooper, a tourist, praised the initiative, saying it would lead to fewer accidents and less congestion.
However, others, like downtown resident Darold Rise, raised concerns about private property being disrupted during construction. "Is it all for progress? Or is he making another billion dollars and ruining another Tennessee city?" Rise questioned.
Tennessee Democratic representatives criticized the project, arguing that it represents a shift toward privatizing infrastructure. Rep. Aftyn Behn noted that Musk's track record suggests the project is more about profit than solving traffic issues. Similarly, Sen. Heidi Campbell expressed support for public transit improvements but opposed the involvement of Musk’s company.
Historical Context and Future Implications
This marks the latest instance of tension between state and local leaders regarding the airport. Earlier this month, Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti petitioned the state Supreme Court to accept arguments over a 2023 law that would transfer control of the Metro Nashville Airport Authority from the city to the state.
Musk’s tunnel venture comes nearly eight years after then-Mayor Megan Barry proposed a similar tunnel project in 2017. However, the plan was ultimately rejected by voters in a local ballot vote.
Despite the controversy, the Music City Loop is moving forward, promising to reshape transportation in Nashville. The project highlights the growing interest in innovative infrastructure solutions and raises important questions about the role of private companies in public projects.
