12-Hour Road Closure Near El Paso Airport Starts Sunday

Road Closures and Construction Projects in El Paso for the Week of August 24

Drivers in El Paso should be aware of several road closures and construction projects that may impact their daily commutes during the week of August 24. The Texas Department of Transportation has provided a detailed schedule of these changes, which include both temporary and long-term closures across various highways and roads.

Sunday, August 24: Partial Road Closure Near El Paso International Airport

On Sunday, August 24, from 3 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a 12-hour partial road closure near the El Paso International Airport. Specifically, three right lanes on I-10 West between Airway and Geronimo will be closed, along with the Airway entrance ramp to I-10 West. Crews will be working on bridge joints as part of maintenance efforts.

I-10 Widening West Project

From Monday, August 24, through Saturday, August 30, crews will be conducting work on the I-10 Widening West project. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (as needed), there will be alternate lane closures on North and South Desert between Vinton and Thorn. This phase involves electrical and miscellaneous construction work.

I-10 Widening West 2 Project

The I-10 Widening West 2 project will run from Monday, August 25, through Saturday, August 30. During this time, there will be alternate lane closures on I-10 east and westbound between Anthony and Nashua, as well as on North and South Desert between Anthony and Nashua. Nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., the left lane between Anthony and Nashua will be closed for concrete placement.

Artcraft Project

From Monday, August 25, through Friday, August 29, the Artcraft project will involve alternate lane closures on Artcraft east and westbound between State Line and Doniphan. Additionally, there will be alternate lane closures on South Desert between Clarkstone and Blue Sky, and on North Desert between Helen of Troy and Northern Pass. Crews will be loading and unloading materials and equipment during this time.

Transmountain Rehab Project

From Monday, August 25, through Friday, August 29, crews will be working on the Transmountain Rehab project. On Loop 375 (Transmountain) east- and westbound between Tom Mays and Main Gap, the left lane will be closed. Work will focus on punch list items.

Borderland Expressway Phase 2

During the same period, the Borderland Expressway Phase 2 project will see alternate lane closures on US-54 east and westbound between Mesquite Hills and McCombs, as well as on McCombs north and southbound between US-54 and Stan Roberts. Crews will be constructing traffic detours and installing portable concrete barriers.

Mesa Safety Lighting and Loop 375 Border Highway Safety Lighting

From Monday, August 25, through Saturday, August 30, there will be left lane closures on Mesa west and eastbound between Champion and Fountain, as well as between North Desert and Remcon. Additionally, there will be right lane closures between Champion and Alto Mesa. These closures are part of lighting improvements on the Mesa and Loop 375 border highway.

Long-Term Closure on Loop 375

A long-term closure will remain in effect on Loop 375 eastbound at Delta between Cypress and Customs, with the right lane closed. This is also part of the lighting improvement project.

Road Repairs and Guardrail Repair

Nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., there will be road repairs on Gateway West at Airway and I-10 eastbound between Mesa Park and Piedras. Additionally, guardrail repair work will take place on US-54 northbound between Trowbridge and Cassidy, with the left lane closed on Monday, August 25. Other days will see closures on ramps and specific lanes due to ongoing maintenance.

Flexible Pavement and Maintenance Projects

From Monday, August 25, through Tuesday, August 26, the US-85 eastbound between Executive and Asarco will have the right lane closed for asphalt work. On Monday, August 25, through Friday, August 29, there will be alternate lane closures on McCombs north and southbound between Gateway South and Stan Roberts, with crews working on the shoulder and cleaning beams.

Purple Heart 375 Widening Project

From Friday, August 1, through Thursday, August 31, the Purple Heart Highway (Loop 375) will have alternate lane closures between Montana Avenue and Spur 601. Crews will be placing RCP and constructing frontage roads.

Horizon/Darrington Reconstruction Project

This project has been continuously closed since Friday, August 8, at 6 a.m., with Town Center Drive closed between Canyon Vista Drive and Darrington Road. Work includes storm drain construction.

I-10 Landscape and Aesthetic Project

From Monday, August 25, through Friday, August 29, there will be left turnaround lane closures on Gateway West and Gateway East Boulevards at Lee Trevino Drive and Zaragoza Road. Crews will be placing concrete riprap, painting, and installing lighting fixtures.

Preventive Maintenance Project

From Saturday, August 23, through Friday, August 29, nightly lane closures will occur on US 54, Doniphan Drive, Spur 601, and Loop 375. These closures are part of preventive maintenance, including pavement marking replacements.
