Dhull Not Thinking Too Far Ahead as He Catches Up

A Journey of Resilience and Redemption

Yash Dhull's cricketing journey has been nothing short of remarkable. From lifting the Under-19 World Cup as captain to securing an IPL contract, his career has seen rapid ascents. However, it wasn't all smooth sailing. At just 21, he faced a life-altering challenge when he discovered he had a 17mm hole in his heart. The diagnosis forced him into surgery and a month of rest, which disrupted his plans for the Delhi Premier League (DPL) and the domestic season.

Despite the setback, Dhull remained determined. He returned to action in August but quickly realized his body wasn’t ready. His blood pressure and heart rate spiked during training, forcing him to withdraw from the DPL. This experience taught him the importance of patience and gradual recovery.

A year later, Dhull is back in the DPL, using the tournament as a platform to re-enter the conversation with the BCCI and IPL teams. So far, he has made a significant impact, scoring 364 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 172.51 and an average of 121.33, including two centuries. His performance has drawn attention, and he is now set to represent the North Zone in the Duleep Trophy starting on August 28 in Bengaluru.

Overcoming Adversity

Reflecting on his low point, Dhull recalls the difficult decision to undergo surgery. "It was around the same time last year, June-July, but I can't remember properly because actually I don't want to," he says. "It was a really tough time. I didn't want to get the surgery done because of the DPL and the domestic season, which was to follow, but the doctor said I had no option."

After the surgery, he spent a month on bed rest. When he tried to resume training, his body struggled. "My blood pressure and heart rate would shoot up when I tried to run and I would be out of breath. The doctor told me anything could happen if blood pressure shot up, if I tried to overdo things."

Despite these challenges, Dhull found support from family, doctors, and coaches. He took a step-by-step approach to his recovery, ensuring he was physically and mentally ready before returning to the field.

A Comeback Fueled by Belief

His perseverance paid off. In the 2024-25 domestic season, Dhull played all seven games for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy, scoring 444 runs with two centuries at an average of 49.33. One of his most memorable knocks came against Tamil Nadu, where he scored a century that left his family in awe. "Even my family was scared whether I had regained the stamina to play a long innings," he recalls. "I not only did well in a pressure match but batted the whole day against a strong side like Tamil Nadu."

The emotional significance of that century was evident in his aggressive celebration, complete with tears in his eyes. The same passion resurfaced when he scored his maiden DPL century, an unbeaten 101 off 56 deliveries. "That surgery was a kind of setback for me in my cricket career," Dhull says. "Sometimes I used to feel that I would never play again. So whenever I score a century now, the emotions come out on their own."

Rising Through the Ranks

Dhull's talent was evident early on. After leading India to victory in the Under-19 World Cup in 2022 with an average of 76.33, he quickly became a name to watch. His Ranji Trophy debut for Delhi saw him score twin hundreds against Tamil Nadu, earning him call-ups for the Duleep Trophy and Irani Cup. He also made his white-ball debut for Delhi and scored a century on debut in the Duleep Trophy.

In December 2022, he was selected for India A for the Bangladesh tour and was appointed captain of Delhi in the Ranji Trophy. That same year, he secured an IPL contract with Delhi Capitals, joining stars like Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma. In July 2023, he captained India A in the Emerging Asia Cup, leading a team that included players who have since gone on to represent India.

Navigating Challenges and Focus on the Present

Despite these achievements, Dhull faced moments of inconsistency and missed opportunities. After the IPL 2025 mega auction, he found himself without a contract. However, he remains focused on the present. "No matter who you are, a sportsperson's career is bound to go through ups and downs, and you have to learn from them," he says. "How will you learn without these ups and downs? In this journey, there are more struggles than success."

Dhull has learned to stay grounded, focusing on each opportunity as it comes. "For now, my focus is the DPL and the next game here. After that, Duleep Trophy is going to be very crucial for me. I'm going step by step now and not thinking too far ahead. I stay in the present and try to enjoy every moment now, because if I perform well, things will fall in place for me on their own."
