Based in Utah, the Beckstrand family has long been a prominent figure in the ninja community. When Kai isn’t working as a part-time firefighter, he coaches at his family’s ninja gym. His father, Brian Beckstrand, was the first to compete on the show back in Season 7. His mother, Holly, and sister, Baylee, also competed alongside Kai and Luke in Season 17. Beckstrand credits cross-training and a focus on lower body strength for making him quicker on the course. “Speed is so important when you’re moving between obstacles,” he added. “That often gets overlooked in the training process.”

Beckstrand spoke about his big win and how his physical evolution contributed to his success. “Lifting weights is something I’ve always been passionate about,” he said. “Having a home gym allowed me to experiment with different movements and lifts, which helped improve my strength.” He emphasized the importance of cross-training, noting that it separates him from the rest of the pack.

Overcoming Challenges

Beckstrand also discussed his experience as a type-1 diabetic and how it impacts his training and competitions. “I don’t let it limit me in any way,” he said. “It’s just another obstacle that I have to overcome.” He stressed the importance of monitoring his blood sugar before competitions to ensure he’s in the ideal range.

Beckstrand shared his thoughts on the shift to a bracket-style tournament for the finals. “When I first heard about that change, I knew this would be my year,” he said. He adjusted his training to focus on speed and lower body strength, recognizing the importance of quick movement between obstacles.

Mental Toughness and Preparation

Beckstrand emphasized the mental toughness required for the competition. “At the end of the day, it’s not just competition. It’s a TV show as well,” he said. He stayed in a good headspace, always ready for anything. “Even if I had just won a race, I never got too comfortable,” he added. Staying warm and prepared was key to his success.

Facing the Competition

On his way to the final, Beckstrand was most worried about his brother, Luke. “He’s my brother. I know his capabilities,” he said. After overcoming Luke, he faced Isaiah Thomas, who had some of the fastest times. “I knew I had to get out ahead early and get in his head,” he explained. His strategy worked, and he secured his place in the finals.

Beckstrand also spoke about his final faceoff with Noah Meunier. “Noah is the type of person who could pull out a win when it mattered most,” he said. Despite being faster, he remained focused and maintained his lead.

The Final Buzzer

Hitting the final buzzer was an emotional moment for Beckstrand. “As soon as I hit that final buzzer, I just collapsed onto the stage,” he said. The first person he saw was Luke, who ran to celebrate with him. “It was a super great, super rewarding experience,” he recalled. For Beckstrand, the title meant more than the prize money.

Plans for the Future

When asked about his plans with the winnings, Beckstrand mentioned investing and preparing for his upcoming wedding. “I’ll probably put the money into some sort of investments,” he said. He also plans to start saving for a family in the future.

Beckstrand also shared why he changed his hairstyle from his signature mohawk. “I wanted to show that I’m maturing a little bit,” he said. While he still bleached his hair blond, he felt it was time for a new look.

Applications for Season 18 are open, and Beckstrand is already planning to defend his title. “Oh, definitely. I plan on coming back as many times as they’ll have me back,” he said. He also expressed excitement about facing Vance Walker, a two-time winner, if he’s healthy. “There’s no one better to prove yourself against than Vance,” he said. With his determination and skill, Beckstrand is ready for whatever comes next.
