Merle often brought his family to significant events, including awards shows and galas. At the 2009 American Country Music Honors, Jenessa was by his side, and five years later, Ben stood beside him at the Grammy Awards, which marked Merle’s final appearance at the event.

After Merle’s passing in 2016, his children continued to honor his memory. A reunion of several of them took place at the 2016 American Country Countdown Awards, where Toby Keith and The Strangers paid tribute to the country legend.

Ben, the youngest of Merle’s children, announced his father’s death in 2016 with a heartfelt message on Facebook. He described how Merle had predicted his own passing and emphasized the deep love and respect they shared. “He wasn’t just a country singer,” Ben said. “He was the best country singer that ever lived.”

Dana, Merle’s oldest child, passed away in 2018, leaving behind her husband and five children. Her brothers and sisters remembered her as a close friend and an integral part of their lives.

Keeping the Memory Alive

Despite the loss, Merle’s children continue to keep his legacy alive. Ben shared a touching tribute on Instagram for Father’s Day, highlighting the bond between father and son. “He has been the best dad anyone could ask for,” he wrote. “He has shared the gift of music, what love should be, and how to be a friend and keep your word.”

Marty also reflected on his father’s influence, emphasizing that to him, Merle was always just “my dad.” He expressed gratitude for the music that keeps his father’s memory alive, saying, “Even though Dad’s gone … those songs bring him back to me right now.”
