Orlando Bloom Exonerated from Testimony in High-Profile Real Estate Dispute

Orlando Bloom, best known for his role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, is no longer required to testify in a high-stakes real estate case involving a $15 million California mansion. The matter has become a focal point of a legal battle between Katy Perry and 85-year-old Texas millionaire Carl Westcott, who found themselves embroiled in a contentious dispute over the property.

At a recent hearing in Los Angeles County, Judge Joseph Lipner ruled that Bloom’s testimony was unnecessary and redundant, potentially causing unnecessary delays in the trial. The bench trial, scheduled to begin on August 21, will determine the damages that Westcott must pay Perry after she won a previous liability trial concerning the sale of the Montecito mansion.

Westcott's legal team had sought Bloom’s testimony, arguing that he played a key role in the property’s inspection and repair process. However, the judge questioned the necessity of this move, suggesting it might turn the trial into a “celebrity circus.” He also pointed out that Westcott could have simply consulted the actual contractors involved in the repairs.

In prior filings, Perry’s representatives claimed that the subpoena for Bloom’s testimony was an attempt to harass him and generate media attention, further complicating what they described as a narrow legal issue.

The Origins of the Legal Battle

The conflict over the Montecito mansion began shortly after Westcott signed a sales contract with Perry in July 2020. Almost immediately, he attempted to rescind the deal, claiming he suffered from various health issues at the time, including dementia, post-operative delirium, and the effects of heavy painkillers following back surgery.

During the 2023 liability trial, Perry’s legal team presented evidence, including text messages, emails, and witness testimonies, that demonstrated Westcott was fully aware and capable during the sale. They revealed that he actively engaged in negotiations, even considering a competing offer from Maria Shriver before finalizing the deal with Perry.

Despite initial public criticism, the trial ultimately validated Perry’s position. The judge noted that Westcott’s own medical expert failed to provide a convincing explanation for his alleged lack of competence at the time of the contract signing.

Financial Implications and Property Condition

After winning the liability trial, Perry placed $9 million in escrow and took control of the property in April 2024, leaving the remaining $6 million of the purchase price pending the outcome of the damages phase. She claims that the four years she waited to take possession of the property caused her to lose over $3 million in rental income. Additionally, she alleges that Westcott’s failure to maintain the property led to $2.29 million in necessary repairs.

The property, which includes a main house, guest houses, a pool, and other amenities, reportedly suffered from significant damage, including flood damage and a tree falling on a structure, cracking the foundation. Westcott, however, argues that Perry has only provided estimates for the repairs, not final contracts or receipts.

Legal Arguments and Trial Preparations

During the latest hearing, Westcott’s lawyer, Andrew J. Thomas, argued that his client had a right to know the actual costs of the repairs. He noted that the property had since been rented to actor Chris Pratt and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, Shriver’s daughter, suggesting that the work had been completed.

Perry’s legal team countered that Westcott should have sought information before the discovery deadline and emphasized that she was not seeking reimbursement for the work she had done. They argued that the responsibility lay with Westcott to return the property in the condition outlined in the purchase agreement.

Although Bloom is no longer required to testify, Perry is expected to appear at the damages trial, likely via video due to her ongoing world tour. The judge has indicated he plans to limit her testimony to one hour. Westcott’s lawyer requested assurances that Perry would be focused during her testimony, raising concerns about potential distractions.

Public Scrutiny and Personal Life

Perry has remained in the public eye this year, taking an 11-minute trip to sub-orbital space aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket in April. Shortly after, news of her split from Bloom surfaced in June. More recently, she was spotted dining with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who later appeared at her concert.

As the trial approaches, the legal battle continues to draw attention, highlighting the intersection of celebrity, real estate, and personal relationships.
