A Remarkable Effort to Combat Invasive Pythons in Southwest Florida
More than 20 tons of Burmese pythons have been removed from the wilds of Southwest Florida by one of the region’s most dedicated and effective science teams. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the ongoing battle against these invasive predators, which have wreaked havoc on local ecosystems for years.
In early June, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida announced that it had removed over 6,300 pounds of snakes during the latest six-month season, pushing the program's total haul past the 40,000-pound mark since its launch in 2013. These numbers are impressive, but they only scratch the surface of the story behind this remarkable effort.
Ian Bartoszek, the wildlife biologist overseeing the nonprofit's python program, often poses a thought-provoking question: "What do you think it took to make 40,000 pounds of Burmese python?" The answer lies in the work done at the snake lab, where captured pythons undergo post-mortem exams known as necropsies. These examinations help scientists understand the diet of the snakes and their impact on local wildlife.
Intern-turned-biologist Ian Easterling explains that the team looks at gut contents to determine what the pythons have been eating. Working with researchers from the University of Florida, they have identified prey pieces such as deer hooves, alligator scales, and bobcat claws. To date, they have documented the snakes consuming at least 85 species in Florida, including foxes, rabbits, raccoons, birds, reptiles, and wild hogs.
The Challenge of Tracking and Removing Female Pythons
One of the biggest challenges in managing the Burmese python population is targeting the females, which are responsible for producing large numbers of eggs. For over a decade, Bartoszek and his team have been tracking these cryptic invaders across approximately 200 square miles of sawgrass, cypress, and swamp land north of I-75, stretching from Naples into the western Everglades.
Their method involves surgically implanting radio transmitters into male pythons, which they call “scout snakes,” before releasing them back into the wild. By following these scouts, the team can locate females, who are critical to the population's survival. Each female removed not only eliminates one python but also potentially hundreds of eggs that could hatch.
Since 2013, the Conservancy’s team has intercepted enough breeding-age females to prevent an estimated 20,000 python eggs from hatching. This targeted approach has proven to be one of the most effective strategies in controlling the spread of these invasive predators.
The Physical and Mental Demands of the Work
The work of capturing pythons is physically demanding and requires a high level of skill and coordination. The team doesn’t rely on vehicles or open areas; instead, they navigate through dense vegetation, pitted limestone caprock, and scrublands that may contain hornet nests or other hazards.
A video produced by the nonprofit captures the intensity of the process, describing it as "quite a rodeo." The team must quickly identify which snakes are scouts and which are new arrivals, ensuring that all females are safely captured. Bartoszek emphasizes the importance of teamwork and preparation, noting that he spends months training with weights and yoga to stay in shape for the fieldwork.
The goal is to create a seamless unit that operates intuitively, minimizing the need for communication during high-stress situations. Bartoszek recalls his early experiences with capturing pythons, acknowledging that his first attempts were far from perfect.
Encouraging Signs and Future Goals
As the program expands and long-term monitoring continues, Bartoszek and his team are seeing positive signs, particularly in the reduction of large, mature females. He notes that when an area is saturated with male scout snakes, the number of reproductive females decreases, which is exactly the desired outcome.
This decline in large females means fewer eggs, fewer hatchlings, and ultimately, less threat to native wildlife. Bartoszek emphasizes that each season brings new challenges and opportunities, as the team moves into previously unexplored areas.
The Broader Impact and Funding Challenges
The Conservancy’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. From National Geographic to the New York Times, the program is recognized globally for its rigorous research and impactful results. Some notable achievements include the largest female python ever recorded in Florida, an 18-foot, 215-pound snake, and the largest male, measuring 16 feet and weighing 140 pounds.
Despite the program's success, funding remains a challenge. Rob Moher, President and CEO of the Conservancy, highlights that the program has grown significantly over the past 13 years, but it relies heavily on donations. Supporters include the Naples Zoo, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and individual donors. Without this support, the program would not have been possible.
Bartoszek acknowledges the value of the research conducted by the team, calling it "priceless" due to the unique insights it provides. However, he stresses that much more work needs to be done, and the effort will require collaboration across multiple organizations and communities.
