Trump Announces Federal Takeover of D.C. Police and National Guard Deployment

President Donald Trump has taken significant steps to address crime in Washington, D.C., by announcing a federal takeover of the local police force and deploying National Guard troops to the nation's capital. This move comes amid rising concerns over public safety and the administration’s efforts to restore order in the city.

During a press briefing, Trump emphasized that the action is part of a broader strategy to combat violent crime and ensure the safety of residents and visitors. The deployment of 800 National Guard members marks the first time the military has been sent to D.C. since the 2021 Capitol attack. Despite this, the city’s mayor has noted that violent crime is currently at a 30-year low, raising questions about the necessity of such a large-scale response.

Law Enforcement Surge Results in Multiple Arrests

In addition to the National Guard deployment, law enforcement agencies were "surged" across the city on Monday night. According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, approximately 850 officers and agents were involved in the operation, resulting in 23 arrests. The charges included homicide, firearms offenses, drug possession, lewd acts, stalking, and reckless driving. Six illegal handguns were also seized during the operation.

Leavitt stated that the effort was just the beginning and promised that the Trump administration would continue to target violent criminals in the coming weeks. “Over the course of the next month, the Trump administration will relentlessly pursue and arrest every violent criminal in the District who breaks the law,” she said.

Meeting with Putin: A Listening Exercise

As tensions remain high in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Trump is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The White House has described the summit as a “listening exercise” aimed at gaining a better understanding of how the war might be resolved. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that the meeting was initiated at Putin’s request and that the goal is to foster dialogue between the two leaders.

When asked if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had provided any specific conditions for the meeting, Leavitt declined to comment on private conversations but emphasized that Trump respects all parties involved in the conflict. She added that the president aims to gain a clearer perspective from Putin on how to bring the war to an end.

Political Developments and Policy Changes

In other developments, Trump extended the U.S.-China trade truce for another 90 days, as announced through social media. The executive order suspends tariffs on Chinese imports until November 9, maintaining the existing terms of the agreement. This decision comes ahead of the release of the latest inflation report, which is expected to show a slight increase in prices.

Trump also announced the appointment of E.J. Antoni as the new commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Antoni, previously the chief economist at The Heritage Foundation, will oversee the release of accurate economic data. His appointment follows the departure of the previous commissioner, Erika McEntarfer, after a controversial jobs report earlier this month.

Meeting with Intel CEO and Other Key Figures

On Monday, Trump met with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, along with several Cabinet members, including Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. The meeting took place after Trump publicly demanded Tan’s resignation last week. During the discussion, Trump praised Tan’s success and indicated that the group would provide recommendations in the coming days.

DC Mayor and Attorney General Prepare for Discussions

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser and Attorney General Pam Bondi are expected to meet soon, according to sources. Bowser expressed concern over the federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department and the deployment of the National Guard, calling the actions “unsettling and unprecedented.” The meeting with Bondi is seen as an opportunity to address these concerns and coordinate efforts to maintain public safety in the city.

Trump’s Vision for a Safer Capital

At the conclusion of a press conference, Trump reiterated his commitment to restoring order in Washington, D.C. He described the federal intervention as a “model” for other cities facing similar challenges. “We’re going to be taking back our capital,” he said. “It’s going to be a model. And then we’ll look at other cities also.”

Trump also hinted at the possibility of future trade discussions with Russia, stating that normal trade relations could be established if the upcoming meeting with Putin yields positive results. “Russia has a very valuable piece of land. If Vladimir Putin would go toward business instead of toward war, you know, it’s a warring nation. That’s what they do,” he said.
