Carousel Ranch's 'Heart of the West' Celebrates Young Riders' Triumphs

A Night of Triumph and Community at Carousel Ranch

At the Carousel Ranch, nestled on Sierra Highway between Santa Clarita and Agua Dulce, a special evening unfolded as part of the 29th annual “Heart of the West” event. This western-themed fundraising gathering brought together more than 500 people for a night filled with entertainment, compassion, and celebration. Among the highlights was a riding demonstration that showcased the talents of three young riders from the equestrian therapy ranch, which serves children and young adults with special needs.

Four-year-old Emilia Olmos was one of the standout performers. As she rode her horse around the performance area, she let go of the saddle horn and raised her arms, earning cheers from the crowd. Her confidence and joy were evident, reflecting the transformative impact of the programs offered at the ranch.

The event was not just about the riding demonstrations but also about raising funds to support the ranch’s mission. The sold-out dinner, auction, and riding showcase helped generate essential resources for the organization, which provides individualized equestrian therapy and vocational training. These programs aim to foster physical, emotional, and job-readiness development among participants.

Denise Redmond, one of the founders of Carousel Ranch, emphasized the importance of the event beyond financial contributions. “This night is really important to us,” she said. “It’s not only about the money we raise, but also about meeting new people who gain appreciation for what we do and may want to get involved or donate.”

Carousel Ranch has become a vital part of many families’ lives. Genevieve Gonzales, a 42-year-old rider, has been coming to the ranch since she was 5 years old. She helped greet guests during the event, showcasing her role in the community. Her mother, Alexandra, shared how the ranch has positively impacted Genevieve’s life, keeping her young and full of joy.

Another participant, 7-year-old Rylan Reagan, demonstrated his growing confidence by standing up on his horse during the performance. His journey began when he was just 3 years old, after being diagnosed with autism. His ride captivated the audience, who cheered enthusiastically as he stood on top of his horse.

Katie Kimes, a 22-year-old rider, concluded the demonstration with skill and a big smile. She started at the ranch when she was 7, after being diagnosed with autism at age 2. Her mother noted significant improvements in her communication skills, social development, and work ethic.

Redmond’s journey to founding Carousel Ranch began in 1985, when she witnessed a powerful moment during a similar event. She saw a young girl with disabilities perform an impressive feat on a horse, which inspired her to pursue a career in the field. Over the years, she learned everything she could about the organization’s work before co-founding Carousel Ranch in 1997.

The ranch started with just one student and one horse in Becky Graham’s neighbor’s backyard. Today, it operates from a 10-acre facility, offering a supportive environment where every student can thrive.

The “Heart of the West” event celebrated these achievements, with guests enjoying a catered dinner and watching videos of the riders’ personal stories. The evening ended with a live auction, further supporting the ranch’s mission.

For Emilia’s family, the event was a deeply emotional experience. Her father, Ignacio Olmos, expressed his pride in Emilia and the impact the ranch has had on their lives. “This place does amazing things,” he said. “We’re extremely proud of Emilia and everything this place has accomplished with her.”
