The Rise of Left-Wing Violence and the Trump Administration's Response

In recent months, a surge in left-wing violence has raised concerns across the United States. From the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk in Utah to a shooting at a Texas ICE facility, these incidents have prompted the Trump administration to take a stronger stance against radical organizations such as Antifa.

Following Kirk’s death, President Donald Trump publicly criticized Antifa, calling it “a sick, dangerous, radical left disaster” and designating it as a major terrorist organization. This move was echoed by Vice President JD Vance, who emphasized the administration’s commitment to targeting non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are allegedly enabling violent activities.

“We’re going to go after the NGO network that foments, facilitates and engages in violence,” Vance stated during a podcast appearance. He stressed that violence is not acceptable in the American system and that the administration aims to reduce its likelihood.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller expanded on this sentiment, pledging to use federal resources to identify, disrupt, dismantle and destroy these networks to make America safer for its citizens.

Incidents and Arrests

The situation escalated further when fourteen suspects were arrested following an attack on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Texas. An officer was shot during the incident on July 4. The Department of Justice (DOJ) alleged that Benjamin Song, a former Marine Corps reservist, fled the scene. He was eventually arrested after a multi-day manhunt.

Song has been linked to the far-left Elm Fork John Brown Gun Club, according to a 2023 civil lawsuit. The Washington Post reported that he was previously associated with the group. There is a growing concern about the network of left-wing NGOs, some of which are allegedly funding groups with ties to radical activists.

Funding and Alleged Ties

American tech mogul Neville Roy Singham has been accused of funding pro-Chinese Communist Party (CCP) propaganda. Additionally, he is alleged to support groups that share personnel overlap with the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL). Tax filings reveal that a founding member of the PSL and two former PSL candidates have held leadership positions with Breakthrough BT Media Inc., a CCP-friendly organization funded by Singham.

The PSL’s Salt Lake chapter has had ties with Armed Queers Salt Lake City since at least 2023. Law enforcement sources indicated that the group was investigated for potential connections to Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin.

The PSL also promoted the June anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles, where 12 police officers were injured and over 561 people were arrested. A House resolution highlighted these events.

George Soros and Alleged Funding

A report from the Capital Research Center (CRC) linked billionaire George Soros to over $80 million in alleged funds to “terrorist and pro-terror groups.” This aligns with the Trump administration’s goal of dismantling such organizations.

Soros’ Open Society Foundation provided money to several groups, including the Center for Third World Organizing (CTWO), which bragged about supporting individuals during the riots sparked by George Floyd’s death. An anarchist group under CTWO, the Ruckus Society, published materials endorsing tactics that may be outside the law.

The George Floyd riots led to 19 deaths and over $1 billion in insurance costs. The Open Society Foundations also gave nearly $2 million to Dream Defenders and $18 million to the Movement for Black Lives, both of which were involved in creating an allegedly “pro-Hamas guide.”

Government Funding of Leftist Groups

Federal spending records revealed that the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) allocated more than $27 million since 2014 to the Tides Foundation and the Tides Center. Some organizations under Tides have pushed anti-police and anti-Israel activism.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the administration’s efforts, there are challenges in cracking down on leftist groups. The Trump administration designated Antifa as a “domestic terrorist organization” through an executive order. However, unlike foreign terrorist organizations, there is no legal list of domestic terrorist organizations, limiting the tools available to address their funding.

Officials rely on existing tools such as the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, conspiracy statutes, and federal hate crimes laws. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence is examining Antifa’s international presence, with plans to recommend its international groups for designation as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO).

This designation would unlock a toolkit across various agencies to identify, freeze, and disrupt financial flows. Republican lawmakers are also aiming to create a select committee with subpoena power to investigate the influence and power of leftist groups, potentially imposing penalties for those who refuse to cooperate.
