Following the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which has led to the release of 20 Israeli hostages and nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, some of the most vocal critics within the Democratic Party have remained notably quiet. This silence comes after months of intense criticism directed at Israel's military actions in Gaza, with lawmakers accusing the Jewish state of committing genocide.

The deal, brokered by former President Donald Trump, marks a significant pause in the conflict that has lasted nearly two years. Alongside the release of hostages, the agreement also included the return of four deceased Israeli hostages and the release of numerous Palestinian detainees. Despite these developments, several progressive Democrats who previously spoke out strongly against Israel have not issued any new public statements.

Among those who have remained silent are Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Summer Lee (D-PA). These lawmakers, part of the so-called Squad, have been known for their strong criticisms of Israel's policies. While Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) did issue a statement expressing relief over the reunions of families, the rest of the group has not commented on the latest developments.

Continued Criticism and Calls for Accountability

Despite the ceasefire, the rhetoric from some lawmakers has not changed. Tlaib has previously referred to Israel’s campaign as "a genocide funded by U.S. taxpayers." Similarly, Omar accused the Israeli government of "indiscriminate bombing," while Ocasio-Cortez described Gaza as "a graveyard for children."

Tlaib, the only Palestinian American member of Congress, last posted on Oct. 10, sharing a message from Oversight Democrats urging federal workers to call a whistleblower tip line. She has not spoken out since the deal was announced. Her early calls for a ceasefire came just 10 days after the attack on Israel that left many dead and taken hostage.

Omar expressed hope that the ceasefire would be "lasting and permanent," while calling for accountability for war crimes committed during the conflict. Lee also praised the ceasefire as a critical step toward ending the genocide and reuniting families. However, none of these lawmakers have updated their positions since the deal took effect.

Political Implications and Public Response

The silence from progressive Democrats has raised questions about their true intentions regarding the ceasefire. Jon Reinish, a Democratic strategist, noted that the lack of response from these lawmakers suggests that their focus may not have been solely on achieving peace. He questioned whether the calls for a ceasefire were genuine or if they were driven by other motivations.

Reinish also highlighted the reluctance among some Democrats to credit Trump for securing the ceasefire. He pointed out that while many wanted the deal to happen, there was hesitation in acknowledging Trump's role in it. "Who cares who got us there? It needed to happen," he said.

While the progressive faction has remained quiet, other Democrats have expressed support for the ceasefire. Sen. Mark Kelly praised Trump for his efforts, calling the deal a "hopeful step toward ending this terrible war." Sens. Chris Coons, Jacky Rosen, and Jeanne Shaheen also welcomed the development, describing it as a long-awaited moment of relief.

Support from Democratic Leaders

Democratic leaders have also commended the agreement. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called it "a wonderful day" and thanked Trump for his role in the negotiations. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need to recommit to achieving a just and lasting peace in the region.
