Homemade Candy Cane Bath Bomb
A Cozy DIY Project: Candy Cane Bath Bombs
Last December, I found myself slipping into a warm bath after a long day of holiday chaos with my little ones. I dropped in one of these DIY candy cane bath bombs, and the gentle fizz, soft red swirl, and cool minty scent felt like a gift to my senses. I had made them the day before with my kids, who loved layering the colors. It was simple, cozy, and exactly what my body and spirit needed.
If you’ve been looking for a soothing, homemade gift or just a moment of peppermint-scented peace, these candy cane bath bombs are a fun project. They’re beginner-friendly, easy to customize, and full of ingredients that are kind to your skin.

The Benefits of the Ingredients
Here’s a quick look at some of the benefits from each ingredient:
- Baking Soda & Citric Acid: These are the fizzy power duo! They react when dropped in water, helping to soften your bath water and soothe your skin.
- Epsom Salt: A magnesium-rich salt known to ease sore muscles and promote relaxation. I love using it during the holiday season when my body feels worn out from all the activity.
- Cornstarch: This gives the bath bomb a silky feel and helps slow down the fizz for a longer soak.
- Almond Oil: A gentle, nourishing oil that softens skin and locks in moisture. You can sub this out for another carrier oil like jojoba or avocado if you prefer.
- Candy Cane Essential Oil Blend (Spearmint & Vanilla): Spearmint brings a cooling, refreshing feel without the intensity of peppermint, and vanilla adds that soft, sweet note that smells just like candy canes.
- Red Mica Powder: Gives the bombs a cheerful pink-red swirl, without synthetic dyes.
Safety Note: While these ingredients are generally safe for most skin types, always do a patch test with any new essential oil blend if you have sensitive skin. Avoid using in broken or irritated skin.

How to Make a DIY Candy Cane Bath Bomb
This recipe makes about 1 big bath bomb.
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup baking soda
- 2 tablespoons citric acid
- 2 tablespoons Epsom salt
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- ¼ teaspoon almond oil
- 8 drops of essential oil blend (5 drops Spearmint essential oil, 3 drops Vanilla for a candy cane scent)
- Red mica powder (to your liking)
- Spray bottle with water
- Bath bomb mold

Instructions:
- In a small bowl, mix your almond oil and essential oils together.

- In a large bowl, combine baking soda, citric acid, Epsom salt, and cornstarch.

- Slowly pour the oil blend into the dry mix, stirring gently.

- Spritz with water a little at a time, mixing until the texture is like damp sand (usually about 6 sprays).

- Divide the mixture into two bowls.
- Add red mica powder to one bowl and mix until you reach your desired shade.

- Layer the red and white mixtures into your mold, pressing down firmly.

- Let them sit and harden for 24 hours before gently removing from the mold.
To use: Drop into a warm bath and enjoy a moment of peppermint peace.

Notes:
- If you don’t have red mica powder, beetroot powder or pink clay can give a natural tint, though the color may be more muted.
- I used a calm essential oil blend in these for my kids, but the candy cane smell is quite divine too!
- Make sure your molds are fully dry before packing in your mixture to prevent premature fizzing.
- Store your bath bombs in an airtight container to keep them fresh and fizzy, especially if you live in a humid climate. As you can see, I left mine out before taking pictures and it got a bit fizzy.
