As Hispanic Heritage Month continues, it's a time to reflect on the contributions of influential individuals who have shaped not only their communities but also the world. One such figure is Cesar Pelli, the architect behind the iconic Salesforce Tower in San Francisco, which stands as the city’s tallest building. His story is one of innovation, cultural richness, and a deep passion for architecture.

Rafael Pelli, Cesar’s son, shared insights into his father’s life and legacy with ABC7 News. For Rafael, Cesar was more than just an architect—he was "Papa," a source of inspiration and guidance throughout his life. “I loved working with my father. I was lucky,” he said, reflecting on the early experiences that shaped his own career.

A Journey from Argentina to the World Stage

Cesar Pelli’s journey began in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, where he grew up surrounded by rich cultural traditions. His decision to pursue architecture was influenced by a university catalog that combined art history, drawing, and mathematics—fields he was passionate about. “It was one step away from arbitrary that he chose architecture,” Rafael explained.

In the 1950s, Cesar was granted a scholarship to study architecture in the United States at the University of Illinois. This move marked the beginning of a new chapter for him and his family. Rafael recalls how his parents, young and adventurous, took a leap of faith by moving to the U.S. with their two sons. “They came on a one-year scholarship, and they decided to risk this big adventure,” he said.

The Pelli family maintained strong ties to Argentina, often taking Rafael and his brother to spend summers there. These visits were filled with cultural experiences, including family gatherings and traditional meals. “We used to eat a lot of meat, which I can't eat anymore!” Rafael joked, highlighting the lasting impact of those childhood memories.

Architectural Masterpieces and Lasting Influence

Cesar Pelli’s work spans the globe, with buildings like the Petronas Towers in Malaysia, the International Finance Center in Hong Kong, and the World Financial Center in New York City. However, the Salesforce Tower in San Francisco holds a special place in his heart. “The Salesforce Tower was a very special project for my father,” Rafael said. “He always thought these are two buildings that come together as a package.”

The tower and its accompanying transit center exemplify Cesar’s belief in creating beautiful, functional spaces that serve the community. “He believed in cities, that you create beautiful buildings attuned to their use, but you also create public space,” Rafael added.

Teaching and Mentorship

Beyond his architectural achievements, Cesar was deeply committed to teaching. He often emphasized the importance of people in shaping the success of a building. “He didn’t want to see pictures of his buildings with no people. It's the people that make it work,” Rafael recalled.

This philosophy extended to his role as a mentor. Many of his colleagues and students went on to start their own firms, inspired by his teachings. “Easily more than 30 people who have gone off to start their own firms afterwards, with this as a launching pad,” Rafael said.

Cesar’s love for teaching was so profound that he even considered abandoning architecture to focus on education. He once took over the deanship of Yale’s architecture school in 1977, showcasing his dedication to nurturing future generations.

Continuing the Legacy

Today, Rafael Pelli carries on his father’s legacy, focusing on sustainable designs across the world. “Each building we do is different, and my father felt like each building needed to respond to its environment,” he said. His work reflects the same principles that guided his father: respect for the surrounding community and a commitment to creating meaningful spaces.

For Rafael, every project is a way to connect with his father’s vision. “I see a project of his that I may not have worked on, but it's also a way for me to connect with him across time,” he said.
