Bee's Best: Top 25 Prep Football Teams in Sacramento Area
The Start of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs
The regular season has come to an end, leaving behind memories and archives. For high school football teams in the Sacramento area, the real excitement begins with the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. These playoffs kick off on Nov. 14 at home sites, featuring eight 8-team brackets. This includes large-school Division I as well as the smallest schools in Divisions VI and VII. Notably, this year marks the first-ever Division VIII championship for 8-man teams.
This week offers teams a chance to rest and prepare for the section finals on Thanksgiving weekend at Hughes Stadium. The upcoming games this Friday will feature 29 Bowl games, stretching from Sacramento down to the southern region of the section in the 209 area code. This new format was introduced after member schools overwhelmingly voted for changes to avoid blowout scores and to give teams a chance to finish their season on a positive note.
It is important to note that these Bowl games are not a money-making opportunity for the CIF. All gate receipts from football playoff games, including the Bowl games, go back to the member schools.
The Bee's Team of the Week
The Casa Roble Rams of Orangevale traveled to Sutter last Friday with the goal of winning the Golden Empire League championship. However, their star quarterback suffered an injury late in the first half. Despite this setback, Aidan Lopez stepped up and delivered a deep-ball touchdown pass to Kymani Burkes, leading the Rams to a 22-9 victory. This win secured them the top seed in the Division V bracket.
Lopez passed for 183 yards and two touchdowns, while the defense, led by players such as Mason Higby, Dunedin Tupou, and Karter Coss, held Sutter to just 9 points. The Rams are now positioned to chase their second section championship in three years under coach Chris Horner.
