CBS Sports 136: Notre Dame Rises into Top 10, Texas Surges in Rankings
College Football Rankings See Major Shifts in November
The college football rankings have experienced a significant shift as the first week of November brings unexpected changes outside the top 10. While the top seven teams remain consistent, the rest of the top 30 has seen a dramatic transformation due to key head-to-head results and some surprising upsets in Week 10.
In the latest CBS Sports 136 ranking, which is a comprehensive evaluation of every FBS team by CBS Sports and 247Sports experts, the top seven teams are unchanged. However, the movement among the remaining teams has been notable. Six out of the 14 teams that were ranked between No. 8 and No. 21 in the previous week lost their games, with some of those losses being particularly shocking. For instance, Miami and Georgia Tech suffered upsets, leading to several teams dropping within the top 30. Despite these setbacks, none of the six teams fell lower than Houston at No. 28, thanks to their strong win-loss records.
This shift has prompted voters to elevate some of their favorite one- and two-loss teams closer to the top 10. Notre Dame is a prime example, as they have been on a six-game winning streak and are on track for a 10-2 season. Just outside the top 10, Oklahoma and Texas have both made significant moves up the rankings. Although Texas defeated Oklahoma in their head-to-head matchup earlier this season, Oklahoma's impressive road victory against Tennessee at Neyland Stadium stands out as one of the most impactful wins of the weekend.
Bowl Projections and Team Movements
With the full 136-team ranking, the focus isn't just on the top 20. The Mover's Report highlights some of the most significant shifts in the rankings:
- No. 45 Baylor (+13): A dominant 30-3 win over UCF helped Baylor improve their record to 5-4, though making a bowl game remains a challenge.
- No. 13 Texas (+11): Texas' four-game winning streak, including two wins against top-10 teams, has propelled them up the rankings. They still have crucial games against Georgia and Texas A&M ahead.
- No. 50 Florida State (+11): After an 0-4 start in ACC play, Florida State bounced back with a solid win over Wake Forest, moving them closer to the top 50.
- No. 35 SMU (+10): An upset win against Miami kept SMU's ACC title hopes alive and maintained their path to the College Football Playoff.
- No. 47 NC State (+10): A thrilling victory over Georgia Tech marked one of Dave Doeren's biggest wins, giving the Wolfpack a boost in the rankings.
- No. 57 Maryland (-10): A 45-point loss at home has left Maryland struggling, with three of their final four games away from home.
- No. 51 Boise State (-11): A 30-7 loss to Fresno State, combined with injuries, has led to a steep drop in the rankings.
- No. 61 UNLV (-15): Despite a 6-2 record, UNLV's lack of wins against top-half FBS teams led to a significant drop in the rankings.
- No. 66 Auburn (-18): A poor offensive performance against Kentucky resulted in a sharp decline, sparking discussions about coaching changes.
