Eagles Edge Lions in Thrilling Week 11 NFL Showdown

Philadelphia − The Eagles and Lions were expected to face off in the NFC Championship game last January. Both teams were the top two seeds in the NFC, with the Lions finishing the regular season with a 15-2 record. However, they fell in the divisional round at home to the Washington Commanders just one week before they would have hosted the Eagles (14-3). The Eagles then went on to defeat the Commanders and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

The stakes for this Week 11 matchup are not as high, but the excitement remains strong, especially since the two teams haven't played since the season opener in 2022. The Eagles won that game 16-9, improving their record to 8-2 and tying with the Rams for the best in the NFC. This game could serve as a preview of an upcoming NFC Championship match.

The Eagles had to work hard for their win, as their defense dominated against the Lions, who entered the game averaging 31.4 points per game. The Delaware News Journal is providing live coverage of the Eagles vs. Lions game, including updates, analysis, and news. Here are some key moments from the game:

Key Moments from the Game

  • Eagles 16, Lions 6: Jake Elliott hits 3rd field goal in wind
The Eagles' offense struggled throughout the game, but Jalen Hurts made a few crucial plays with his legs. He converted a 3rd-and-6 from the Lions' 47-yard line with an 11-yard run. The Eagles eventually got close enough for Jake Elliott to kick a 49-yard field goal into the wind, giving them a 10-point lead with 10:15 remaining in the fourth quarter.

  • Eagles 13, Lions 6: Jared Goff stopped on 4th down at the Eagles' 3
The Eagles' defensive line continued its strong performance. Facing a 4th-and-goal from the Eagles' 3-yard line, Jaelan Phillips pressured Jared Goff, who threw an incomplete pass into the end zone with 5:10 left in the third quarter. Up to that point, the Lions were 1-for-11 on third and fourth down, including 0-for-4 on fourth down.

Halftime update: Eagles 13, Lions 6

Jalen Hurts' 1-yard touchdown on a tush push with 16 seconds left in the first half gave the Eagles a 13-6 lead. But it was a tough first half offensively for both teams.

The Eagles started three drives from Detroit's side of the field, but could only muster two field goals. The wind was a factor. But both defenses were also playing well.

Jalen Hurts started out 3-for-12. It wasn't all his fault. DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert each dropped two passes. Hurts finished the first half 9-for-18 for 63 yards, and Saquon Barkley had 32 yards rushing on 12 carries.

A.J. Brown had 6 catches on 8 targets for 43 yards after a week when he questioned his role in the offense.

In all, the Eagles had 138 yards of offense, while the Lions had just 145, with 74 of them coming on two plays back-to-back that led to Detroit's only score.

The Eagles' defense once again played well. Jordan Davis' first deflection led to Cooper DeJean's interception, giving the Eagles the ball at the Lions' 11. The Eagles could only get a field goal out of it.

They added another field goal with 6:02 left before Detroit tied the game on Jameson Williams' 40-yard TD catch with 5:05 left in the half. The extra point missed because of Williams' taunting penalty made it a 48-yard attempt into the wind.

Eagles 6, Lions 6: Jameson Williams catches 40-yard TD pass, PAT miss

The Lions struck quickly this time, getting a 34-yard pass from Jared Goff to Amon-Ra St. Brown, followed by a 40-yard TD on a cross to Jameson Williams, who outran Adoree Jackson into the end zone.

But Williams was called for taunting, pushing the extra-point attempt back 15 yards. It missed.

Eagles 6, Lions 0: Jake Elliott's 2nd FG after Birds stop fake punt

The Eagles started inside Lions' territory for the third time after Moro Ojomo stopped Grant Stuard on a fake-punt attempt at Detroit's 43.

The Eagles again struggled to move the ball. After Jalen Hurts picked up 12 yards on 3rd-and-11 to the Lions' 21, the Eagles stalled, and Jake Elliott kicked a 34-yard field goal. The Eagles lead 6-0 with 6:02 left in the first half.

Hurts started the game off 3-for-12 for 21 yards.

Eagles 3, Lions 0: Jalen Carter, Moro Ojomo make huge stops

The Lions, who don't tush push, faced a 3rd-and-1 at their own 48. QB Jared Goff handed off to Jahmyr Gibbs, who was stopped for no gain by defensive tackle Jalen Carter, setting up 4th-and-1. The Lions went for it. Goff handed off to Gibbs. This time, Moro Ojomo stopped Gibbs for no gain, and the Eagles took over with 13:02 left in the second quarter.

Eagles 3, Lions 0: Cooper DeJean INT sets up field goal

The Eagles had a great opportunity early when defensive tackle Jordan Davis, who stands 6-foot-6, deflected Jared Goff's pass and Cooper DeJean intercepted it. DeJean returned the ball 21 yards to the Lions' 11. But the Eagles couldn't get in the end zone, settling for a 27-yard field goal by Jake Elliott with 9:43 left in the first quarter.

It was DeJean's first regular-season interception. He had a pick-6 last season in the Super Bowl.

Eagles inactives: AJ Dillon healthy scratch vs Lions

The Eagles are once again listing running back A.J. Dillon as a healthy scratch against the Lions. That would confirm that Tank Bigsby has supplanted him as the No. 2 back. Bigsby had 104 yards rushing vs the Giants on Oct. 26. For the season, Bigsby has 18 carries for 134 yards. Dillon has 60 yards on 12 carries.

The Eagles' other inactives are QB Sam Howell, OL Drew Kendall, CB Mac McWilliams, DT Ty Robinson.

Lions inactives: 2 key starters out, Sam LaPorta goes to IR

The Lions, meanwhile, listed CB Terrion Arnold and S Kerby Joseph as inactive. On Nov. 15, they placed star TE Sam LaPorta on IR. But two other key players listed as questionable are playing in RT Penei Sewell and LT Taylor Decker.

Eagles don't elevate anyone from practice squad

The Eagles decided not to elevate anybody from the practice squad for the game against the Lions. That's the result of everyone on the 53-man roster being healthy enough to play.

Eagles vs. Lions prediction

  • Eagles 28, Lions 26: Wouldn't it just figure that A.J. Brown, after getting dropped by so many Fantasy Football owners, has a breakout game against the Lions? Believe it or not, this game will be won on defense, and the Eagles' is better. That is, as long as new edge rusher Jaelan Phillips and defensive tackle Jalen Carter can get pressure on Lions QB Jared Goff. He's great at getting the ball out quickly and accurately, but he isn't mobile. That can lead to mistakes (i.e. interceptions). – Martin Frank

Eagles injury updates

The Eagles are fully healthy heading into the game. That includes C Cam Jurgens (knee), who is returning after missing the last two games with a knee injury. It also includes fellow offensive linemen Landon Dickerson (quad), Tyler Steen (oblique) and Lane Johnson (ankle), who were limited in practice Nov. 12, but practiced fully the next two days. G/C Willie Lampkins was listed as QUESTIONABLE, but he is remaining on IR.

Lions injury updates

On Nov. 12, the Lions ruled OUT TE Sam LaPorta, CB Terrion Arnold and S Kerby Joseph. They listed 10 players as questionable, with three of those players staying on IR. Among those on the active roster QUESTIONABLE for the game are RT Penei Sewell and OL Taylor Decker.

Weather forecast for Eagles vs Lions

While it won't be as cold as it was in Green Bay, it won't be warm, either. At game time, temperatures are expected to be around 43 degrees, dropping to about 40 by game's end. But 10-15 mph winds out of the west northwest will make it seem much colder.
