Get ready: Cyclone may strike northern Australia soon

Tropical Cyclone Fina Develops in the Top End, Sparking Concerns

Residents of the Top End are preparing for potential weather disruptions as a tropical low has developed into a cyclone. This event marks what could be an early start to the cyclone season. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that Tropical Cyclone Fina formed at 3:30 am ACST on Wednesday morning, located approximately 315 km north-northeast of Darwin.

Currently classified as a Category 1 cyclone, Fina is expected to move in an east-northeast direction and intensify to a Category 2 by Wednesday night. The winds near the center of the cyclone have been recorded at up to 75 km/h, with gusts reaching as high as 100 km/h.

Later on Thursday, the cyclone is anticipated to shift towards the south and southwest, heading toward the Northern Territory coast. Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury mentioned that there could be a coastal crossing sometime over the weekend or into early next week. However, there are various possibilities regarding the path of Fina, including the chance that it may avoid a direct impact and "peter out."

For now, NT communities are not expected to face direct impacts from Fina within the next 48 hours. According to Ms. Bradbury, the forecast showers and thunderstorms are considered normal during the build-up season.

Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms in the Top End

In recent days, heavy rain and thunderstorms have affected parts of the Top End. Charles Point experienced a significant deluge, receiving 196 mm of rainfall within three hours on Monday. This brought the region's 24-hour total to 228 mm, marking the heaviest daily rainfall in a decade.

Darwin has not faced a cyclone since the Category 2 system Marcus caused power outages for nearly 29,000 properties in March 2018. In December 1974, Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin, resulting in the loss of 66 lives.
