Live Updates: Two Golfers Tie Course Record of 61 at World Wide Technology Championship

PGA Tour Returns to Cabo San Lucas for 2025 World Wide Technology Championship

The PGA Tour is back this week with its annual stop in Mexico, the 2025 World Wide Technology Championship. This event marks the fifth of seven contests on the FedEx Cup Fall series. The El Cardonal at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas, which is the first golf course designed by Tiger Woods, will host the tournament for the third consecutive year.

Fans can follow along all day Thursday with live leaderboard updates from the 2025 World Wide Technology Championship. The leaderboard from Cabo will be available throughout the day, and tee times are also listed on that page.

Nick Dunlap and Sami Valimaki Tie Course Record with 61s

Nick Dunlap and Sami Valimaki have each posted a score of 61, making them the 14th and 15th players to achieve this feat on the PGA Tour in 2025. Only four players have bettered these scores so far this year.

Dunlap's performance was remarkable. He made back-to-back birdies on holes 16 and 17 and faced the downhill par-5 18th to close out his round. At 9 under through 17 holes, he was already leading by a shot and managed to extend his lead with an eagle on the final hole. His 11-under 61 tied the course record at El Cardonal at Diamante.

Valimaki also shot a 61, starting on the back nine with five birdies, including three in a row to make the turn. On the second nine, he carded six more birdies, including two straight on holes 8 and 9. This performance helped him move up in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, climbing from 103rd to 53rd.

A Strong Field with Multiple Players in Contention

After 18 holes, there is a large group of players tied for third at 8 under. Vince Whaley, Kris Ventura, Matti Schmid, Chad Ramey, and Andrew Putnam all shot 64 and are at 8 under. Another five players are tied for eighth at 7 under, four shots back. At 3:28 p.m. local time, 99 of the 120 golfers in the field are at even par or better.

Vince Whaley fired an 8-under 64 on Thursday and closed with consecutive birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to take the clubhouse lead. Whaley started the week 89th in the points and has improved 37 spots to 52nd. Moments later, Kris Ventura posted a matching 64 to forge an 18-hole clubhouse lead. Ventura is up from 119th to 58th.

For Ventura, playing in Cabo is a homecoming. "I'm 50 percent Mexican, so half my life has been over here almost. I went to college in the U.S., but this is where I started my career," he said after his round.

Key Implications for the FedEx Cup Fall Standings

Top 100 in the FedEx Cup Fall standings earn 2026 PGA Tour cards, while top 60 get into the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational. Both events are signature events on the PGA Tour.

Kris Ventura has birdied half of his holes so far, starting at 7 under through 14 holes. He began on hole 10 with a birdie, followed by birdies on holes 15, 17, and 18. He had a third straight birdie on hole 1 and added two more on holes 3 and 5. This strong start has moved him up to 57th in the standings.

High-Profile Players Headline the Field

J.J. Spaun, the reigning U.S. Open champion, and Ben Griffin, a two-time PGA Tour winner this season, headline the field of the 2025 World Wide Technology Championship. The field consists of 120 golfers, making it one of the weaker fields of the FedEx Cup Fall.

Ben Griffin also has a unique connection to the event. Last year, he attended a panel featuring Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang as part of the Business Innovation Summit hosted by World Wide Technology. This year, the event includes a concert featuring Train and O.A.R. for attendees.

Golf Courses at Diamante

The area at Diamante offers multiple golf courses for players. The main attractions are the Dunes course, designed by Davis Love III, and El Cardonal, the first golf course designed by Tiger Woods. Other options include a 15-hole putting course and a 12-hole Oasis short course.
