Mamdani: Palestine Inspired Son's Mayoral Bid
A Historic Victory for Zohran Mamdani
In early November, democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani made history by winning the New York City mayoral election in a landslide. His victory sent shockwaves across U.S. politics and energized the political left. What was once a campaign that had barely managed 1% support just a year earlier now saw Mamdani securing a decisive win, capturing the attention of both supporters and critics alike.
Among those most taken aback by his success was his own father, Mahmood Mamdani. In an interview with Al Jazeera Mushaber reporter Allaa Azzam, he admitted that he and his wife never imagined their son would become mayor of New York City. However, he viewed the outcome as a reflection of a changing political landscape.
Mamdani's campaign focused heavily on affordability and did not shy away from his strong stance against Israel’s actions against Palestinians, a topic long considered taboo in American politics. As the first Muslim mayor of the country’s largest city and the first person of South Asian descent to hold the position, his win marked a significant shift in representation.
The Mamdani Family Influence
Zohran is the son of Mahmood Mamdani, an anthropology professor and postcolonial scholar at Columbia University, and Mira Nair, an Indian American director. He emerged as a frontrunner in the mayoral race in June, dominating the Democratic Party primary with 56% of the vote, surpassing former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Cuomo ran again as an independent in the November 4 election, but Mamdani once again secured a wide margin, receiving over 50% of the vote compared to Cuomo’s 41%. Mahmood described his son’s political ascent as surprising, yet not entirely unexpected. He noted that Zohran’s resilience and determination were evident from an early age.
Mahmood attributed some of Zohran’s political acumen to his upbringing. Unlike many American children, Zohran grew up in a multi-generational household, living with three generations of family members. This environment helped him develop a broader understanding of people and build strong interpersonal skills.

A 'Mood of Change'
Mahmood also credited the growing political momentum behind Zohran’s campaign to a widespread desire for change. He pointed out that voters were increasingly dissatisfied with the status quo and that young people voted in record numbers. This shift in sentiment gave confidence to marginalized communities, including Muslims and recent immigrants, who felt empowered to participate in the political process.
The November mayoral race saw the highest voter turnout in over 50 years, with more than two million ballots cast. Mahmood sees this as a test of whether the public’s faith in the electoral system will be rewarded during Zohran’s tenure as mayor.
He acknowledged that the political landscape is dominated by powerful interests and financial influence. While unsure of how well his son understands this world, he expressed confidence in Zohran’s ability to learn quickly. Mahmood noted that significant resources were used to undermine Mamdani’s campaign, but they ultimately failed, exposing the limitations of money in politics.

A Focus on Palestine
Throughout the campaign, Zohran remained steadfast in his criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza, calling them genocide. This stance, though widely supported by human rights organizations, is rare in mainstream U.S. politics, where opposition to Israel is often seen as a sensitive issue.
Despite the controversy, public opinion appears to be shifting. A March 2025 Pew Research Center poll showed a rise in unfavorable views of Israel, increasing from 42% in 2022 to 53% in 2025. This trend was particularly noticeable among younger voters and even some conservatives.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has led to the deaths of at least 69,500 Palestinians since October 2023, sparking global outrage. Mahmood believes the events in Gaza have ushered in a new era of global awareness and scrutiny of Israel’s actions.
“The real consequence of Gaza is not limited to Gaza,” he said. “Gaza has brought us a new phase in world history. There will never be a return to a period when the world believes that what Israel is doing is defending itself.”
