Micron’s Dominance in the Automotive Memory Chip Market
Syracuse, N.Y. – While Micron Technology is experiencing a surge in success due to the rapid development of artificial intelligence, the company has quietly emerged as the world's largest producer of memory chips used in cars and trucks. This achievement highlights Micron’s significant role in the automotive industry, where its products are now essential components in a wide range of vehicle systems.
Micron is currently the leading supplier of automotive memory chips, manufacturing over 300 million chips annually for vehicles. These small but powerful chips are found in everything from entertainment systems and dashboard displays to automatic braking systems. The automotive chip market is growing at a faster rate than even the AI market, according to one expert.
“Over 50% of the U.S. cars on the road have some technology from Micron,” said Chris Jacobs, Micron’s vice president and general manager of automotive and embedded market segments. “I can safely say that Micron has been present at all major car manufacturers in the world.”
Micron’s dominance in the automotive memory market stems from its long-term focus on this sector. For decades, the company has prioritized the automotive industry, which is now the fastest-growing part of the semiconductor industry. This strategic approach has allowed Micron to outperform competitors and establish itself as a key player in the market.
A Major Investment in Central New York
Micron’s success in the automotive memory market is also a sign of its potential to succeed in its ambitious plans for Central New York. The company is planning to build four massive chip factories in the town of Clay, with an estimated cost of $100 billion. These facilities could eventually produce billions of chips, some of which may be used in vehicles. However, the specific products that will be manufactured at these new plants are still under discussion.
For now, most of Micron’s automotive chips are produced at its factory in Manassas, Virginia. The global automotive memory chip market is valued at around $7 billion, with Micron holding half of that market share. No other chipmaker comes close, as Samsung holds just 13% of the market.
The Importance of Memory Chips in Modern Vehicles
Memory chips play a crucial role in modern vehicles, storing the data that processing chips use for calculations. A typical car can contain between five and 50 Micron chips, according to Jacobs. These chips support various systems, including the enriched cabin, beautiful screens, connected telemetry, and power train systems.
As vehicles become more sophisticated, especially electric ones, the demand for memory chips is increasing. Micron is well-positioned to take advantage of this growing market. In addition to its success in the automotive sector, Micron is also benefiting from the artificial intelligence boom, which has led to record revenues and stock prices.
Micron is building two chipmaking plants in its hometown of Boise, supported by billions in taxpayer subsidies. It is also planning to construct four plants in Clay, a move that a top company executive has called a “bet-the-company” decision.
Safety and Reliability in Automotive Chips
Safety is a critical aspect of Micron’s automotive chips. The company became the first memory chip maker to meet the highest international standards for chip safety in cars. Chips that meet the Automotive Safety Integrity Level D standard control life-saving technologies such as brakes, air bags, and power steering.
To meet this high safety standard, a chip must have a random failure rate of less than once every 100 million hours of use. This means that a chip would need to function for 11,000 years without failing. These chips not only store memory but also detect their own rare failures and alert the driver.
“We understand all of the failure mechanisms that could possibly happen inside of a (a chip), and we put countermeasures in place,” Jacobs explained. “If there’s some error, there will be an error flag raised in the chip that will put a check engine light on or elicit a warning.”
The Future of the Automotive Memory Chip Market
The automotive memory chip market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Global sales for the entire market are projected to more than double in the next eight years, rising from $7 billion to $18 billion. In 2023 and 2024, the automotive sector was ranked as the fastest-growing sector above AI and data centers, according to Valeria Bertacco, a University of Michigan computer science and engineering professor who studies the automotive chip industry.
Over the past 40 years, the number of semiconductor components in cars has increased by a factor of 100, Bertacco said. In the 1980s, a typical car had fewer than 100 chips, while a self-driving or electric car today can contain several thousand.
Micron is considered a Tier 2 supplier, meaning it sells chips to companies that integrate them into automotive systems. These systems are then sold to carmakers. While it’s likely that your car or truck contains a Micron chip, the only way to be certain is to open it up — though Jacobs jokingly advises against doing so.
