Texas and Miami Top 10? Should They Oust Notre Dame?

Top 10 College Football Teams for the 2023 Season

As the 12-team College Football Playoff (CFP) enters its second year, the rankings released by the CFP committee are no longer the definitive measure of a team’s strength due to new seeding rules. However, these rankings still hold significance and continue to spark debates among fans and analysts alike. After every weekend, I will unveil my updated top 10 rankings based on performance and potential.

1. Ohio State (9-0)

Ohio State has faced two challenging games this season against Texas and Penn State, both of which were initially seen as national title contenders. Unfortunately, both teams have underperformed. While Texas is starting to find its rhythm, Ohio State may not secure a truly impressive win by the end of the season. Nonetheless, watching the Buckeyes play for just 10 minutes reveals their dominance in college football. The question remains: who will challenge them?

2. Indiana (10-0)

Indiana has consistently dominated its opponents this season, but its game against Penn State was a different story. The Hoosiers had to rely on a last-minute drive, culminating in an incredible touchdown pass from Fernando Medonza to Omar Cooper. Cooper’s acrobatic catch might be the touchdown of the year. Indiana’s unbeaten record remains intact, and the way they beat the Nittany Lions could be just as impressive as some of their blowout wins.

3. Texas A&M (9-0)

Texas A&M fans have been anxious each week, fearing that their team might be exposed as frauds. However, the Aggies have proven themselves time and again. Even a tough trip to Missouri turned into another easy win, with a 38-17 victory over the Tigers. Led by star quarterback Marcel Reed, the Aggies seem destined for the College Football Playoff. This could be the year they finally break through in College Station.

4. Alabama (8-1)

Alabama is undeniably real, and there is no debate about it. The season-opening loss to Florida State was a fluke, and the Crimson Tide have since bounced back with eight consecutive wins. Their recent victory over LSU showcased their dominant defense. With upcoming games against Oklahoma and Auburn, Alabama has earned the right to be the highest-ranked one-loss team.

5. Georgia (8-1)

Georgia entered the weekend with a shaky record, almost losing each of its last three games. However, they managed a decisive 41-21 win over Mississippi State. Despite not being as dominant as in previous seasons, the Bulldogs remain dangerous under the leadership of their top coach. They continue to win, proving their resilience.

6. Ole Miss (9-1)

Ole Miss had a relatively easy game against The Citadel, winning 49-0. Trinidad Chambliss threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing the Rebels' offensive firepower. Lane Kiffin's team has only one loss this season, to Georgia, and seems poised to make the College Football Playoff. With remaining games against Florida and Mississippi State, an 11-1 record appears inevitable.

7. Texas Tech (9-1)

Texas Tech has invested heavily in its roster, thanks to the support of a billionaire oil baron. This investment has paid off, as the Red Raiders dominated BYU, who came into the game with an 8-0 record. Even without quarterback Behren Morton at full health, Texas Tech didn’t face any real challenges. The team is the deepest and most talented in the Big 12 and is viewed as the conference favorite.

8. Oregon (8-1)

Oregon faced a tough challenge against Iowa in poor weather conditions. Despite the difficulties, the Ducks managed a last-minute drive to secure a game-winning field goal. Oregon’s only loss this season came against Indiana, which is considered one of the top two teams in the sport. Although they haven’t looked as dominant as others, the Ducks remain a strong contender.

9. Miami (7-2)

Miami has been a consistent topic of discussion after being ranked No. 18 in the first CFP poll. The Hurricanes have the same record as Notre Dame, which is ranked No. 10. Despite a dip in performance, Miami has secured a top-10 win and a victory over USF, a Group of 5 favorite. To maintain their position, Miami must keep winning, as quality wins drive their success.

10. Texas (7-2)

Texas has struggled throughout the season, with Arch Manning’s slow start and a loss to Florida. However, the Longhorns have won four in a row, including victories over Oklahoma and Vanderbilt. They still face challenges, particularly with their offensive line, but they deserve to be in the No. 10 spot ahead of Notre Dame, a team capable of making another run in the CFP.
