Tammy Wynette and George Jones

Tammy Wynette and George Jones were two of the most celebrated figures in country music. Their paths first crossed during the late 1960s while touring together. At the time, Wynette was married to Don Chapel, who had previously worked with Jones. The relationship between Wynette and Jones eventually led to a dramatic split as they confessed their feelings for each other during an argument. They left Chapel’s home with his three children and traveled to Mexico to secure a divorce.

Despite their initial happiness, their relationship was plagued by Jones’ struggles with alcohol, which ultimately contributed to their divorce in 1975. Wynette later reflected on their breakup, saying, “George is one of those people who can’t tolerate happiness. If everything is right, there’s something in him that makes him want to destroy it.”

Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson

Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson met in 1969 while competing in Melodifestivalen, a Swedish music competition. They soon formed ABBA with Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog. The group became one of the most successful pop acts of all time, but their personal relationships suffered under the pressure of fame.

Lyngstad and Andersson married in 1978, but their union ended in 1979, followed by the divorce of Ulvaeus and Fältskog in 1980. These splits led to ABBA’s disbandment in 1982, though the group reunited for their comeback album Voyage in 2021.

John and Michelle Phillips

John and Michelle Phillips were part of the 1960s folk group The Mamas & the Papas. Their relationship, however, was not without its challenges. After Michelle was discovered to have had extramarital affairs, John fired her from the group. She was temporarily replaced by Jill Gibson before being reinstated.
