Dave Coulier's Cancer Journey: A Roller Coaster of Challenges and Triumphs

Dave Coulier, best known for his role as Joey Gladstone on Full House, has faced a series of health challenges that have tested his strength and resilience. Nearly nine months after being declared cancer-free, he revealed on December 2 that he had been diagnosed with a second form of cancer. This new diagnosis has once again placed him on a difficult path, but he remains determined to fight.

First Diagnosis: Stage 3 Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

In November 2024, Coulier first shared the news of his cancer diagnosis. He was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which he discovered after experiencing swelling in his lymph nodes due to an upper respiratory infection. A PET and CT scan, along with a biopsy, confirmed the diagnosis. The news came as a shock, as he went from having what seemed like a minor illness to receiving a life-altering diagnosis.

“I went from, I got a little bit of a head cold to I have cancer, and it was pretty overwhelming,” he recalled. “This has been a really fast roller coaster ride of a journey.”

Coulier’s wife, Melissa Bring, played a crucial role in supporting him through this period. She described her background in holistic wellness as helping her prepare for the caregiving role. Together, they worked closely with medical professionals to develop a treatment plan.

Battling Through Chemotherapy

After the diagnosis, Coulier underwent several rounds of chemotherapy. In March 2025, he was declared cancer-free after seven months of treatment. His former Full House co-stars, including Candace Cameron Bure and John Stamos, celebrated the news on social media.

“I feel like myself again,” he said during an interview, expressing relief at finally feeling better. However, the road to recovery was not without its struggles. He and his wife had to have tough conversations about the possibility of not surviving the treatment.

“After [the fifth round of] chemo, he was like, 'I don't know if I could do this again,'” Bring shared. “He was like, 'I’m prepared either way. If I die, I die. And if I can stay here, great. I want to.'”

A New Diagnosis: p16 Squamous Carcinoma

Just months after being declared cancer-free, Coulier revealed on the Today show that he had been diagnosed with a second type of cancer—p16 squamous carcinoma, a form of head and neck cancer. During a six-month checkup, doctors noticed a flare-up where his tongue meets the throat. At first, he assumed the tumor was related to his previous lymphoma, but he soon learned that the two cancers were unrelated.

“I’d been feeling great, so I went into shock,” he admitted. Despite the surprise, he remained focused on fighting the new diagnosis. He is currently undergoing 35 rounds of targeted radiation and is expected to finish his last session on December 31.

Grateful for Early Detection

Coulier has expressed gratitude for early detection, which he believes saved his life twice. He shared that if he hadn’t had the PET scan after his first diagnosis, the second cancer might have gone undetected for longer.

“It turns out, if I hadn’t had that PET scan, then they wouldn’t have had this early of a detection and I’d have been in [...] a world of pain soon,” he said. “So as weird as this sounds, I’m now actually thankful for the first cancer, because it helped me detect this second one.”

He also emphasized the importance of regular screenings, encouraging others to get prostate exams, mammograms, and colonoscopies. “Early detection has saved my life twice,” he said.
